Joni Mitchell and sepia photos

Last week Joni Mitchell had her birthday! Happy birthday and thanks for all the music! Joni was born (1943), as Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada.
In 1966 she was performing at the Newport Folk Festival. Mitchell was an unknown when she walked on the stage. She sang “Chelsea Morning” and “Michael from Mountains,” and when she was through, the audience was dead silent. Then they broke into applause and gave her a standing ovation. Mitchell was 23 years old.

A black animal (maybe gorilla?) with 3 apples in his mouth at once. Thanks to whoever shared this wonderful hungry critter.

Now let's go back in history, these are native chiefs in their new English dress, when signing a treaty in England....namely the first treaty signed between the English and Natives.

First treaty with English and Native Americans...as re-published in the Asheville Citizen Times.

And going to Africa, in the area near Tsavo, here's an elephant queen, photo by W.B. Lucas

While on the coast, a baby sea turtle starts his life leaving these tracks.

Photographer unknown.

Who knows who this is? I don't have any information on this character, who could be Miss Marple.

Is it our familiar darling, Agatha Christie?

Seeing this picture downloaded close by the portrait, I now tend to think Beatrix Potter.  And under her illustrations, there's the very one of the woman in the green hat.  But here's another group of her photographs!

And I'll finish this week with this trio of slightly silly young women as they enjoy a jug of spirits.

I'll be back next week.

Today's quote;

Aldo Leopold writer and ecologist wrote, "Harmony with land is like harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his left."

  1. Yes, I'm certain that's Beatrix Potter. I used to lead walking holidays in the Lake District and at one time was leading alongside a special interest group who were visiting the places associated with Beatrix Potter - many of the places illustrated in her children's books are actual places which are still recognisable today. The picture of the women at the seaside reminds me of my childhood visits to the coast when the women would hold up their skirts and the men would roll up their trousers for a paddle in the chilly waters of the North Sea. Thanks for another varied set of photos that sparked many memories - now where are my Joni Mitchell albums?

  4. What a varied collection this week. The elephant tusks are amazing, and I am reminded how elephants are presently evolving to have lesser tusks. This will keep them safer.

  5. A nice variety of photographs. The one of the little baby sea turtle heading out on its own is sweet. Joni Mitchell had a style of singing all her own. I've never heard anyone else sing quite the same way. :)

  6. Listening to Joni Mitchell's music brings back lots of memories!

I love vintage photos...they usually tell a wonderful story.

Fall has been very warm and dry here this year--we need some snow!

  7. Another nice mix of people, places, and animals. I liked the tall ships. Years ago my family was fortunate to see many of the remaining sailing ships up close from my dad's sailboat when there was a festival of tall ships in Norfolk, VA. Joni Mitchell remains one of my favorite artists of all time.

  8. I always liked the Miss Marple books best among Christie's detective novels :)

  9. Another fascinating montage, and that will be me at the beach (like the Slovakian women) if I don't shed the poundage from sheltering at home this past 1.5 years!

  10. A collection of photographs that surprised us in its range, as we moved from sailing ships, to women enjoying themselves, to nature, to early American history, to English women writers. Wow!
