Something about cooking

This week to show you a collection of old photos (and maybe a few that aren't so old) for Sepia Saturday, I'm looking for the food related photos. Mmm, if I can find any.

This little one is getting a drink, then will need changing to dryer clothes...while the wood stove is the heart of the kitchen for his mother. Don't you just know those two buckets have been carried from the source of their water!

And before women had the gifts of freestanding wood fired stoves, this is the way they cooked. All these little "Dutch Ovens" are covered with live coals below and above, probably to bake some lovely bread. My son Tai and his wife use a Dutch Oven inside their gas oven in the kitchen to rise their sourdough bread... then formed into round loaves.

On a recent visit with them, I asked for blueberry pancakes, and Tai was most obliging.

Another breakfast was steel cut oatmeal with fresh and dried fruit liberally stirred in. I somehow didn't get photos of the wonderful evening meals...which they prepared together.

I may have mentioned that I'm considering moving to southwest Colorado when an apartment comes available...the dry air is one inviting factor, while being near my son and his wife is also a big one. I'll have to be careful adjusting to the altitude however, which I faced during my short 9 day visit. My pulmonologist said a visit od 6 weeks would show how much I can acclimate to it, but I can't very well do that. So if it happens, we shall see.  Yesterday I was sick with coughing a lot, and even had a fever by late afternoon. Tylenol to the rescue, and today I feel pretty good.

A purchase of my favorite sweetener at the Tailgate Market last year attracted one of the creators of the very same thing.

A mother from Southeast Missouri in 1938. Fannie Lou Hammer's America. Another woman who had the galvanized bucket for water, as well as a wood fired stove.

From internet, "Cooking in 1900."  Some stoves were coal fired as well as wood. This ornate one doesn't have any clear designation, but there appears to be a hot water tank next to it. With all the pipes it's possible she had running water also. (But there's a familiar bucket in the pantry also!)

The crew which helped produce the TV cooking shows for Julia Child. Only thing missing? A bucket!

And to match the theme for Sepia Saturday more exactly, here we see fresh veggies at the Tailgate Market in Black Mountain.

Our free veggies (fruit and bread) from Bounty and Soul, which is brought to different locations on different days in the valley. Those blueberries are organic locally grown, and were frozen immediately...as well as the bread. I'm so fortunate to live where this is available for anyone who wishes to wait in line. At one pick-up place they just give out a box of edibles, but that's wasteful as many things aren't what the person wants, or will eat.

It's always fun to share with other photographers on Sepia Saturday...some of which will be on the suggested meme, and others will be enjoyable as they've gone in another direction!!

Saturday interests

Why the one white rock?

While I did see some nice critters to share today, I also spent about an hour last Saturday at the Tailgate Market.

First let me introduce Roberta the Basset.

Isn't she a sweetheart?

I live across the courtyard from Roscoe the Basset...another tan and white. I may have a photo of him somewhere.

------------
Saturday around 10, before the heat, but still humid as can be!

Here's another critter who was leaving as I was arriving.

Nope, I don't have any idea who she is, but she was just willing to stand there while I shot a few pics. OK, let's give her a name...maybe Aunt Grace.

A very nice band, where people were sitting on picnic table benches and one woman held her flower bouquet for me to include here. Sorry, i didn't get the name of the band.

Yes the farms are producing pretty well by late June!

My challenge was keeping my balance on the uneven ground. I've become quite acclimated to pavement.

I was glad to walk all through the market, mainly in the shady places. Talked to a couple of old friends. And then was out of breath when I finally returned to my car.

Thanks CNN showing me why I am being so careful about this dizziness that comes from medications. Vertigo and blood pressure changes with bending over, sitting or standing up are hard enough as it is!

Simple things

Right by the tracks in Black Mountain is this tiny park...a bench and a few flowers.

And the Grey Eagle (used to be the name of Black Mountain) with the NC and American flags.

An older shot of my eldest son and his wife Barbara...I didn't mark where this was!

June is Pride Month...so Barbara's Macron booth is decorated to the hilt. She makes and sells Moonlit Macrons (no not Macaroons) all around Tampa/St. Petersburg area at outdoor venues and conventions...

Later on I met this cute little one...I think they said it's 12 weeks old. What a cutie!

That was the Saturday joy... Tailgate Market 9-12 each Sat. during spring, summer and fall!

Last Saturday morning in Black Mountain

One of the MudBuddies, with her beautiful wares on display

A choice of three sizes of bouquets...I got a medium size.

It may have been in the 80s, but most of the displays were shady for this week's Tailgate Market.

Amelia's bowl

Amelia has been a long time member of the clay studio at Black Mountain Center for the Arts. She now is throwing her pots at home. I don't know who made that pretty pale peachy cream color glaze, but I love it. And I love this bowl. She's one of the Mud Buddies who sell their pottery weekly in Black Mountain NC at the Tailgate Market.

Amelia has always had a slightly oriental flare to her decorations, and this glaze design is really pleasing.

And it's just right for a serving of pop corn...or rice and veggies...or whatever! It's very well thrown and light-weight. A good pot.

I used to be a Mud Buddy also. I am glad to be a potter who supports potters...and have often heard this from other shoppers.

At the Tailgate Market 5/15 & 5/22/21

This was the second week of the season, and the first Saturday morning after the state gave announcements (as did the whole country) that we didn't have to wear masks outdoors if we'd been vaccinated. I enjoyed walking around bare faced that day. A lot of my friends kept masks on though.

The Mud Buddies were back showing their beautiful wares. They didn't have them out last year because of the Pandemic.

I signed a petition for our Black Mountain library branch to remain in town, rather than merging with the Swannanoa library branch as part of Buncombe County's new plan...which would mean a new facility rather than renovations at either or both of the old well used buildings. Our Friends of the Library are also selling some used books here.

Amelia and Bette are smiling at me (they said so!)  Bette has been making jewelry with beads...nice pieces each week. She says she does them to exercise her hands.

Cathy is smiling at me too, showing her pottery with its cheerful colors.

Amelia has a new style of pottery with this warm yellow matt glaze...I bought a bowl last week from her!

This is the new nursery school that was built last year...but I only went to the market once last summer with the pandemic limitations.
