Not so Wordless Wednesday ?

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. This month, we pay tribute to the incredible impact this landmark civil rights law has had on the lives of individuals with disabilities. Join me to celebrate Disability Pride Month.

Art in Bloom came about with

First the painting...

Then an arrangement of a different order at the Asheville Art Museum.

I think I preferred these hands to the ones done by Andrew Wyeth at the Asheville Museum of Art as seen in a previous blog.

Joanna Macy, at 96, is preparing to leave this life. She has been an ecologist, activist and teacher for many years. Here's a little snippet of what she has said:

A heated half brownie with two flavors of ice cream giving such a wonderful treat. Easy peasy too! I think this is the most decadent sweet I love most these days. Of course a slice of really good - you name it...!

What's your favorite sweet?

An old photo:

It may not be pretty, but those tapes and an IV line were part of my treatment which gave me a stent on my heart to save my life just 5 years ago in March. I sometimes love medicine. This was at the beginning of Covid and the hospital staff were learning how to do their jobs with so many more precautions.

And by that October I was part of the 35th Cohort of Ornish Rehabilitation at our hospital. Here I had a heart monitor watching my heart as I would soon start more exercises. That wholistic rehab program meant stress relief, meditation, diet and exercise as ways to change my life in order to be healthy. I'm doing most of those (and only get one brownie a week and split it for 2 servings!) Unfortunately the Mission Hospital was acquired by HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) and became a "for-profit" venture, so the Ornish program was cut, and a simple exercise program continues for rehabilitation.

But I'm still a "wholistic" gal.

Yesterday I started having chiropractic treatments for my sore neck, especially when bending down! About most of western (and eastern) culture these days has people bending their necks down for phones. Mine started to hurt more and more, so I am going to a new woman in town, and I liked my first treatment a lot. Holistic wellness. That's what a whole person should have. She gave me three things to do for the next week. But the main thing she did was to push on some acupressure points which released some tension. I could just feel that melting away.  She does a kinesiology approach to determine what and where to do things. I'll go back next week!

Joanna Macy - Women's History Month 1

Here's a video of Joanna giving 20 minutes to share with us a bit on her approach to climate change.

Joanna Macy has made other YouTube videos, just search her name inside the YouTube listings.

My good friend, Sarah Vekasi sees Joanna as a mentor. Sarah is a leader in our community, former activist, and Eco-Chaplin (after getting her own M.Divinity.) And her current interest is a business of making and selling pottery.

Quote for Today:

"Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels."

When you're allergic to cats...

The other link for a wise person (mentioned yesterday) was Joanna Macy speaking of Climate Crisis as a Spiritual Path. HERE.

This darling cat was very interested in getting love from a visiting woman who said she was allergic to cats. She was selling her jewelry in a nice downstairs room of a house, while the ceramics/pottery studio was located on the other side of the drive. They were both part of the Kenilworth Arts Studio Tour in Asheville.

Everyone but cats was wearing masks.

Today's quote:

I became a vegetarian after realizing that animals feel afraid, cold, hungry, and unhappy like we do. -Cesar Chavez, farm worker and activist (31 Mar 1927-1993)

EcoBuddhism and today

This came through FB...it's a link to an article about NOW, by Joanna Macy *from 2016.

I have a friend who is an Eco-Chaplin, who introduced me to her teacher, Joanna Macy's work.  I only know a little about it, and am in awe.

Joanna Macy on How to Prepare Internally for WHATEVER Comes Next

“Yes, it looks bleak. But you are still alive now. You are alive with all the others, in this present moment. And because the truth is speaking in the work, it unlocks the heart. And there’s such a feeling and experience of adventure. It’s like a trumpet call to a great adventure. In all great adventures there comes a time when the little band of heroes feels totally outnumbered and bleak, like Frodo in Lord of the Rings or Pilgrim in Pilgrim’s Progress. You learn to say ‘It looks bleak. Big deal, it looks bleak.’”
