A voice - Maybe the Angry Women - 11

by Fine Art Photograph Mathilde Oscar, Le Cri

"Having the right to show up and speak are basic to survival, to dignity, and to liberty. I’m grateful that, after an early life of being silenced, sometimes violently, I grew up to have a voice, circumstances that will always bind me to the rights of the voiceless."

Your credibility arises in part from how your society perceives people like you, and we have seen over and over again that no matter how credible some women are by supposedly objective standards reinforced by evidence and witnesses and well-documented patterns, they will not be believed by people committed to protecting men and their privileges. The very definition of women under patriarchy is designed to justify inequality, including inequality of credibility.

To have a voice means not just the animal capacity to utter sounds but the ability to participate fully in the conversations that shape your society, your relations to others, and your own life. There are three key things that matter in having a voice: audibility, credibility, and consequence.

Audibility means that you can be heard, that you have not been pressed into silence or kept out of the arenas in which you can speak or write (or denied the education to do so—or, in the age of social media, harassed and threatened and driven off the platform, as so many have).

Credibility means that when you get into those arenas, people are willing to believe you, by which I don’t mean that women never lie, but that stories should be measured on their own terms and context, rather than patriarchy’s insistence that women are categorically unqualified to speak, emotional rather than rational, vindictive, incoherent, delusional, manipulative, unfit to be heeded—those things often shouted over a woman in the process of saying something challenging (though now death threats are used as a shortcut, and some of those threats are carried out, notably with women who leave their abusers, because silencing can be conversational or it can be premeditated murder).

To be a person of consequence is to matter. If you matter, you have rights, and your words serve those rights and give you the power to bear witness, make agreements, set boundaries. If you have consequence, your words possess the authority to determine what does and does not happen to you, the power that underlies the concept of consent as part of equality and self-determination.

Sexual assault can only thrive in situations of unequal audibility, credibility, and consequence. This, far more than any other disparity, is the precondition for epidemic gender violence.

Excerpts from Meditations in an Emergency by  Rebecca Solnit

My vase with four depictions of life as I see it. Here the demonstrations against the power-mongers.

"Americans are coming together over a shared fear. We know people living in fear. A higher percentage of people know the fear around what will happen to their children, their parents, their friends. We live in fear of being hurt while helping others. We live in fear of having more rights taken away. We live in fear of billionaires dictating our lives thinking they have our backs when what they do well is acquire money, sometimes ours, to do with what they will.

Those that feel powerless are watching the powerful. The powerful listen to each other. The tide will continue to turn as the powerless feel more disconnected and less in control of what their lives could be like.

The powerful won’t listen until they feel powerless.

Thanks to posts on the internet, which I'm re-sharing here!

Lee Steadman from Minneapolis posted this on his FB page as of 2.13.26 at noon:

"ICE Activity continues to be high. Despite what Tim Walz, Tom Homan and National Media are reporting, the reality is that things on the ground in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, the surrounding suburbs and counties across Minnesota continue to see heavy ICE prescense, (sic.) abductions, staging at mobile homes, targeting schools, new tactics being implemented...
We are not in a drawback. Do not believe the headlines."

He gives an audio interview where he lists abductions and where ICE activities were happening as of Thursday.

For my children's children.

 For my children's children.

Consider  the UN Declaration of Human Rights...

First thought to share:
The systems upon which our civilization is dependent are broken. We need improved systems, not improved people.
What do you want to keep, and what should be tossed out?
I seriously encourage everyone to start envisioning a new system of life on this earth!

Second thought I want to share:
I haven't been giving my blogs to anyone I'm related to. All my children and their children aren't interested in them. Same for my ancestry information.
So what's the purpose?
You, who are reading this are somehow affiliated with me As blog friends.
What can I give the people I love most? What do they want from me?

Third thought:
I've a zillion journals, which I thought I'd write into an interesting book someday when I retired. I'm slowly throwing them away, because they are quite boring actually!
Is there anything in my life worth writing about for the "Life of Barbara?"

Obviously these are rhetorical questions.

I read Keith Kron's newsletters (free at Keith Kron What Really Matters) daily. Last Wednesday he shared about the situations of hypocrisy from parents to children, and from leaders to their constituents. Here are his concluding paragraphs.

Perhaps instead of thinking about wanting to go back to the way things were, we need to think about who we want to be collectively. Maybe we should start doing that now. And perhaps with the caveat of “And not at the expense of someone else.”

Minnesota is teaching us that now.

Will the leaders learn from it?

And don't forget we have just this one earth upon which we all live, and need to care for!

...former Unilever CEO Paul Polman, said, “We know what needs to be done [about climate change]. It is not a failure of resources. Global capital has never been more abundant. It is a failure of collaboration and collective action. A failure of governments to align around shared interests rather than narrow advantage; of businesses to act as system-shapers rather than short-term competitors; and of leaders across sectors to share risk, and act in service of a common good.”

Today's goddess:

The Venus of Hohle Fels is probably one of the most famous goddess figurines. carved of mammoth ivory about 35,000-40,000 years ago. She was found during excavations at Hohle Fels Cave in southwestern Germany, and is just 5.9 cm high. There's a loop for hanging her as perhaps a pendant rather than her head.

Remember craftsmen and women only had bones and rocks like flint to make carvings with at that time.

Today's quote (do you want these again anyway?)

We often don’t ask people what matters to them. We ask how they are doing. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It may be perfect for getting a conversation going.

Maybe the better question is what engages you? And what do you know enough about that you know you need to learn more?

I don’t love putting people in boxes. I’d rather be there when they opened up.

Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio

 Frank Lloyd Wright - Home & Studio (1889- 1909)

Oak Park IL

This Complex served as Wright's primary residence, studio and laboratory during the first 20 years of his career from 1889 to 1909.

The Home and Studio is the Birthplace of the Prairie Style of Architecture and a Historic House Museum.

Most of the sculptures on the exterior of the Home and studio were designed by Wright's friend and collaborator, Richard Bock.

These include the two boulder figures flanking the entrance of the studio, which features a man crouching and breaking free from the ground beneath him (above the column on the right in this photo)

Wright raised six Children with his first wife, Catherine Tobin and designed such famous buildings as The Robie House, Larkin Building and Unity Temple.

Many of his Trademark designs can be seen in their Infancy, as he experimented with concepts before sharing them with Clients.
Or take a tour...

Sharing with Tuesday's Treasures

Today's quote:

Sometimes we need to be alone, to simply do nothing but enjoy the sound of silence.

And while you are enjoying the beautiful construction by Frank Lloyd Wright, or Miss Smith's cranes, here is a bit of trivial world facts. Not politics though!!

I subscribe to Keith Kron's Substack, -Weekly Prayer. February 16, 2025

Just one paragraph gave me some world statistics that I wanted to share, thanks to Transparency International.

We pray for an end to corruption worldwide. Transparency International released its 2024 list of levels of corruption of countries around the world.
  • The least corrupt countries in order are Denmark, Finland, Singapore, New Zealand. Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Australia, Ireland, and Iceland (the latter three were tied) are in the top 10.
  • The countries with the most corruption were South Sudan, Somalia, Venezuela, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Nicaragua, and the Sudan and North Korea (the latter two tied).
  • Russia ranks 154th.
  • The United States is tied with the Bahamas in 28th.
  • Canada is ranked as the 15th least corrupt country.
  • Mexico is ranked 140th.
  • Italy ranked 54th continues its policing in the Palermo area to end organized crime. Over 150 people suspected of mafia connections were arrested.
We pray for justice and fairness worldwide. (bullet points mine)

This is the order which Keith published the information in. And he gave many other interesting things associated with Feb. 16. (Sorry I didn't have room to include this on that day's post)

If you’re looking to celebrate today is also National Almond Day, National Tartar Sauce Day, World Whale Day, Do a Grouch a Favor Day, Innovation Day, Library Lovers Day, and No One Eats Alone Day—even if all you eat is almonds with tartar sauce. We say a prayer of remembrance for these observations.

And finally, a prayer for perpetual kindness, attention, and giving. A father in Fort Worth, Texas, this week out at breakfast with his family of five, learned from his server that the bill had been paid for by another customer. The server brought the $85 dollar receipt to show the note written on it that read, “Thank you for being a great dad.” The father also saw the note on the back of the receipt that read. “Thank you for being the dad they need you to be regardless of who’s watching. We need more men like you, Thank you for letting us see your love for them all.” The note was ended with, “from a retired army medic.”

Politics here...kind of.

And I also enjoyed on Sunday last...an interview by Jen Rubin with Heather Cox Richardson on the Integrity of the President. If the link doesn't work, it may be because I'm a subscribed member of The Contrarian, bu the free version also has a lot of information to keep up with our wild times.
