Less sleep, more productivity?

Sleep 2 hours in 24, and be a genius?

R. Buckminster Fuller did it. Others have tried it.

Would you?
Would I?

I'm pretty sure a few political leaders have also tried this.

Blog friend AC in Canada is often talking of short nights' sleep. Not sure he's getting to be a genius that way, but perhaps ...

Editors Note: I am pretty sure this photo is not the one at Black Mountain College, because of the materials displayed. He used venetian blinds first to build his first dome at BMC. No plastic sheeting was available at that time.

Here is a post from 2019 about Dr. Fuller:

Just look at all those triangles! This is one of the designs in the gallery that was an extension of the presentation at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts.

A friend and I attended the Sunday night performance, and it was a really wonderful experience. - Another talented one-man show! And David Novak had the Buckminster Fuller persona down pat.

And then he even had memorized a whole 2-1/2 hour show(with 15 min. intermission)!  I loved it, and wondered that he is going to be performing it in Poland this next week. I can't imagine being able to discuss these concepts in another language...but apparently he can! The author of the play was D. W. Jacobs, and it's been performed more than 1,000 times since he wrote in in 2000.

My first experience with R. Buckminster Fuller was reading his book "Operating Manuel for Spaceship Earth" back in the 60s-70s...as well as many iterations of the Whole Earth Catalog. He was very popular with the counter-culture, and I was thrilled in 1971 to join a UU Church in Tampa FL that was housed in a geodesic dome.  I also saw the domes in the New York Worlds Fair and Expo 67 in Montreal. Then Disney World had opened in Orlando with Epcot.

Anyway, I also remember driving my camper van with some friends from Tallahassee to Altanta GA to hear Bucky Fuller speak in person, probably in 1977-78.  We camped in the van after the lecture, which might have been in the Fox Theatre. It was amazing to hear him talk quickly in much the same long drawn-out sentences, with no words less than 3 syllables, and often modifying something that had been mentioned in several sentences prior, but it mostly made sense. When did he catch a breath?

I just looked quickly at his biography, because I was pretty sure he was related to an early UU/transcendentalist, Margaret Fuller.  Yes, she was his great aunt but they never met, because she died about 50 years before his birth. And I learned in the bio that Bucky Fuller was the world president of MENSA from 74-83.

But back to the performance...and the great exhibit in the gallery at BMCA .  We quickly looked at the exhibit during the intermission.  It included some panels and artifacts from the Museum of Black Mountain College (Asheville, NC). The college is where Bucky first put his idea of the geodesic dome into models...and finally a working one.

I had such a great year in 2019. I just read through my We'Moon calendar, where I kept track of the things I was doing, as well as progress on various pottery pieces. Then about June, I stopped journaling. So I've tossed it out, and know that the rest of my events were covered by blogs. Wedding of my son, trip to Colorado with a friend, trip to OH for Thanksgiving and then back to FL for Christmas. And then a few months later in 2020 I had my heart attack. Oh well. I'm glad as always to have had adventures while I could!

Today I just canceled the cardio-stress test. I was too anxious, giving myself nausea just  considering getting there. I'll look into some anti-anxiety drugs for the rescheduled one.

In my neighborhood

 I'm Miss Rogers.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood...won't you be my neighbor? (Imagine I'm right by Mr. Rogers with a funny tinkling tune playing on TV)

The town was called Grey Eagle until the railroad named it Black Mountain. I do wonder what that antenna goes to...there aren't any radio stations nearby, and there's already one up on the police/fire station. But probably more trouble to take it down than just leave it there, wrecking pretty photos!

A map of central Black Mountain NC - on a kiosk down by the tracks.

Details for tourists

Only if you park, or are walking on the sidewalk, might you read about Buckminster Fuller's first geodesic domes being built (several miles away) at Black Mountain College 1948/49. The placement of this marker is bizarre, next to US Highway 70 where cars are traveling 40 mph.

A young Buckminster Fuller standing on a skyscraper.

He said: "It is now highly feasible to take care of everybody on Earth at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. It no longer has to be you or me. Selfishness is unnecessary. War is obsolete. It is a matter of converting our high technology from Weaponry to Livingry."

One of my daily feeds sent me this (plus a follow-up)

 R. Buckminster Fuller...his Dymaxion Map of the world.

This map finally gives  correct  sizes and relationships of the continents to each other.

The Open Culture article shows this and other maps, but I always love to hear about the descriptions that haven't changed through the years.

"Buckminster Fuller, who in 1943 applied his Dymaxion trademark to the map you see above, which will likely remind you of his most recognizable invention, the Geodesic Dome, “house of the future.”

UPDATE:

And to continue about Schools and Climate Change -  I saw an article about 9:30 Tues. morning about NC schools getting energy efficient funds from the federal government.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm traveled to North Carolina this week. In a stop at Reidsville Senior High School in Rockingham County, Granholm announced awards of the Renew America's Schools grant and touted the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed during President Joe Biden's administration. Biden's appointees have made frequent stops to North Carolina this campaign season.

So it's folded into a campaign issue, in order to be covered by the news. I imagine the teachers and staff pulled away from their work to sit with the presentation weren't all smiling. But the money is real (though really a drop in the bucket of their needs.) It does help improve energy efficiency in schools in rural areas where the tax base can't afford to upgrade them.

It's funny how getting their votes looks like the push behind that help, but the help was part of Biden's Infrastructure Help.

Yep politics!

Some folks might wonder how my health is doing. So a quicky update on that:

Lost a few days, where felt miserable, just hung out, listened to audio books, and coughed till my sides hurt so bad. Then one day I woke up and didn't cough so much. It was time to get back into Barbara's life, starting with simply going to lunch, then doing some laundry. I wish whenever I'm sick folks would offer to do a load, rather than offer to bring me something like chicken soup. Oh well. That's the breaks. Maybe I'll try to remember to make that kind of offer when I have a sick friend...

The great blue ball

The Space Station captured the far side of the moon.

And then the 2 American astronauts came home in the Dragon capsule and landed in the Gulf of Mexico. I watched spellbound for several hours.

The capsule had been bobbing in the water about half an hour, then was hauled by cables onto the small vessel to take it to land. There had been a lot of interested smaller boats belonging to private citizens and maybe reporters, circling around and then sometimes zooming in closer. Apparently they were somehow managed to stay at a greater distance, but they still remained there.

I waited about half an hour more, hoping they'd be opening the door...but they kept finding some kind of gas fumes around the outside (that's what they said, with some letters like MBCDT though not those) to define what it was. Something to do with the booster rockets or the things that sent the various parachutes out to slow down the capsule before it hit the water.

I guess I reached my limit of sitting and watching a TV reality show. But I did like that it was "real time."

Today's quote:
Buckminster Fuller defines a Sphere as “a multiplicity of discrete events, approximately equidistant in all directions from a Nuclear Center.
Ever since we discovered that Earth is round and turns like a mad spinning top, we have understood that reality is not what it seems: every time we glimpse a new aspect of it, it is a deeply emotional experience. Another veil has fallen.

But the leap made by Einstein is unparalleled: spacetime is a field; the world is made only of fields and particles; space and time are not something else, something different from the rest of nature: they are just a field among the others.
