For the bookish among us

At Lake Tomahawk there are two free libraries, one for adults, one for children's books. I gave you this peek a few days ago.

I guess someone is reading all the adult books. Mmm, have to see if I have any to donate! They are supposed to return them of course!

Children's books were there that day, gone the next.

I and some of my friends are lovers of books...and usually are reading at least one, while there's a pile waiting for us.

My current fun is rereading Sir Terry Pratchett's Wee Small Men with Tiffany Aching. They may be geared for young adult, but are smashingly funny anyway. I'm listening to this one, and have several others of the series waiting. I just finished several non-fictions, and am due for a few laughs.

I was happy to have access to audio library books on my phone for my recent hospital visit. The TV was awful, and I hate daytime TV anyway. (a tiny blurry screen, Direct TV choices.)

I recently posted this photo of my mother while on vacation, and she enjoyed reading more than any activities. She never enjoyed being photographed though.

Linnie and Lou(ise) George, distant cousins of mine, 1880. We shared our ggg grandparents  One of them wrote her journal of moving from Alabama to northern Louisiana, with all the trials of growing up and being educated in the south before the Civil War. I've transcribed it for my descendants if they are ever interested. Here's the first of four chapters describing their lives. They were my first cousins three times removed.

Sarah Louise George Tompkins Specht, journal keeper (Lou George) at 84 in 1926

A tea party with laughs, unknown date (maybe 1900?)

Teresa and her hubby, Chuck, in Pigeon Forge TN a few weeks ago. She is one of my favorite book-lover friends. And yes, that's really his beard!

Sharing with Sepia Saturday where there's anything one wants to share that perhaps is related to the posted meme of the week. Yes, there's a fellow reading late into the night. I know the feeling, and fortunately nobody has taken my photo while doing that.

Kate recently played Lacrosse in tournaments with her team in Clearwater FL (they live in OH). Then she and her family went to Berlin Germany for a week to meet with her sister who's doing a study abroad semester. Such fun to have those opportunities for this family!

Sequestered!

Smoke from wildfires several miles away, came roaring (blowing!) through last evening. Sitting in my living room with windows closed, but curtains and blinds up, I started coughing.

So now blinds are down, and curtains closed. It's a dull place inside, while bright sun shines outside.

Screen shot of warning of unhealthy air last evening.

It has gone down this morning. I'm wearing my N-95 mask when I go pick up my lunch at the senior center.

    1. I'm not often looking for more to read...with the stack that is ever-present, and seems to multiply in the night!!

  3. Little Free Libraries here are for taking and keeping books, or donating. My local ones rarely have enough room to donate more though. So I free cycle where I can.

    1. That's such a good opportunity you have, free cycle! With tourists walking through our Lake Tomahawk paths, there are those who didn't pack a book, and don't plan to take one home either, but want something to divert their attention when sitting/lying around relaxing!

  4. One of our little libraries is across the street from the Q-anon family- Dennis leaves his political books there- Pretty sure they take them and burn them in the back yard.
Take special care - forest fire smoke is so bad- we had four air filter fans set up in one room when the fires were bad and it still was not enough. Wear a mask also!

    1. Yep, definitely going in my N-95 when getting from apt. to car, car to senior center, etc. That's so funny about the Q-anon people!

  5. Hadn't heard of your forest fires. There's a free library on the porch of the old store that will one day be our new library building. It has a large selection - several bookcases full. People stop there just to give and take books. I found a new book there The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store and its on my stack to read.

  7. Ive never used a little library and don’t use the library much. Whenever I want a book they either don’t have it or it is way back in the queue.

    1. I've enjoyed finding some things I place a hold on, many months later, and some of which I still want to read, while others have become Meh! Audio books are more available than those that appear on my iPad...and it's much easier to listen to them than hold it and read!

  8. I love to read & always make sure my Kindle has a backlog of books waiting to be read. I do read a 'real' book once in a while, but Kindle stories are so handy & you don't always have to be in good light to read them. The only problem occurs when you're right in the middle of an exciting part of the story & the "Lo battery" sign pops up. Usually I can make it through another couple of chapters before I have to give up & recharge. :) BTW, sorry to hear you had another bout with pneumonia. Reoccurring pneumonia seems to be happening quite a bit this season for some reason?

  9. That is terrible about the smoke, good that you have a mask. We have some little free libraries here and there is always something interesting to find.

  10. Awful about the fires! The Carolinas just can’t seem to catch a break.

  11. I love listening to audio books, it's a great way to keep the brain entertained while the rest of the body gets the rest it needs... :)

  12. Those little neighbourhood libraries have been a great addition in recent years. We have two within five minutes walk of our front door.

  13. The world needs little free libraries now more than ever. When I get a chance this summer I will build one from the scrap lumber left over from repairing my house. It might even include a free vegetable bin for my wife's garden surplus. We always have too many books and zucchini anyway. Let's hope the rain comes this week to put out those wildfires.
