Lake Tomahawk has thawed from its ice of a few weeks ago. And a few sunny days bring out shirt-sleeved people enjoying the environment
And yes, the first little sprouts are coming up in the garden near the path.

This duck flew overhead and landed on the water. It wasn't until I tried to get this shot of him, that I realized he had a white spot on his head and his sides...he wasn't a mallard like the other ducks. But he was more interested in staying a long way away so this is the best I got.
The mallard couple were more used to hanging out by the bank nearby.
Noonday sun casts long shadows still...it's February.
And I stopped to watch the gentleman sailor with his radio controlled boat skimming around with the wind.

I went upstairs to pick up a "to-go" lunch and saw some of the other seniors who signed up for these low cost meals. I don't go every day, but look at the menu for the month and sign up for which days I want to order their meal. They are prepared by the Moose Cafe' - a favorite southern style restaurant in Asheville, then trucked over to Black Mountain in insulated boxes. Council on Aging still is offering them (she says as so many federal programs are being cut)...and we pay a minimal fee of $1.50. I usually toss $2 into the till, to keep the program running as long as we can!

Today's politics:
If you’re feeling down, depressed or filled with dread, may I recommend a bit of action? Join a protest, go on a march, be around others who feel the same way as you do! It will lift your spirits, and who knows? And the world needs to see us out there, to know that Americans are not complacent nor complicit. Share your participation and others’ with your contacts and social media, because the mainstream media will report on protests only sporadically, at best. Next time, invite your friends and neighbors!

Today's laugh:
...I love your signs of spring, as we shovel snow again this morning.
ReplyDeleteIt was nice while it lasted. Our little spit of snow this morning melted by noon, but more is due tonight!
DeleteIt always amuses me how quickly some folk get into short sleeves - and even shorts - at the first hint of sunshine, when I'm still in my thick winter woolies. As for your duck, I think it's a tufted duck, black and white with a blue bill.
ReplyDeleteAh ha...someone who knows ducks. Thanks. I have known at least a couple of men (maybe they came from California?) who wore shorts all year long. Seriously, here where it's freezing at least 5 months of the year! Not me, I'm so glad I have a puffy coat that I can slip on to go pick up the mail!
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteLove the views of the lake and ducks. I will guess at your duck and say it is a Ring-necked duck.
It is nice to see the signs of spring. Take care, have a wonderful day!
Ah, someone who knows ducks...so happy to have your input! Our little time of warm weather has now passed, and it is a normal enough thing in February, you'd think those bulbs would have learned by now!
DeleteThere is something special about those early warm days, especially with the spring bulbs breaking through. We sometimes have a few days like that in March but that is a bit too early for the bulbs.
ReplyDeleteThe February summer is over, alas. But I think of your mountain of snow and am doubtful that your bulbs will have a chance even in a month!
DeleteThis is the time of year when the envy set in for those who live further south. Even with some warm-ish days we still have a nice layer of ice on the ground. Lovely to see your photos....hope is in the air!
ReplyDeleteThat was a fun warm few days, and now I'm back to hovering around a heater and wearing gloves when going outside. If I don't wear gloves my fingers are cold for hours. Yes, there is some hope, though today we have 2 snow waves coming apparently. The first one melted in 34 degree temps. Next one won't because it's going to be colder tomorrow. Hope there's not much ice, no fun!
DeleteSo many programs are in danger of being cut or wiped out by the DOGE/GOP/ wrecking ball. I hope your lunch program continues. And I love the thing about the duck.
ReplyDeleteFingers and toes crossed. I'm most concerned about the farmers not getting their support from US_AID. Quack!
DeleteHard to believe it was warm enough for short sleeves! Definitely hasn't been that warm here yet.
ReplyDeleteThe lake looks so nice, Barb, and what an excellent price for lunch! There is a senior meal program here but we have never been. Just don't think of us as senior yet, though we certainly are. Maybe one day we'll check it out.
I started going to the senior lunch program maybe 10 years back...at least before COVID. There were already people in their 90s, and now they are gone. But now we can't sit with each other after the Hurricane damage to the building, but just pick up our boxed lunch and go home to eat it. I wonder sometimes about the elder seniors that I had been with, like a 101 year old woman who came just to an exercise class once a week. And now we can't have any classes. And I don't know when the building might be rehabilitated, with all the other damages in town.
DeleteLooks like the place to be is down by the lake. Nice art by Tina Schart Hyman, I like it.
ReplyDeleteThe other parks in the area had worse damage from the hurricane...with their bodies of water washed away and no banks left...at least one park which used to be fun to walk in. I do like that art also, and think of the simple pleasures of those walkers.
DeleteA duck or not a duck!! I love that. And I hope the senior center returns.
ReplyDeleteQuack! One needs silly sometimes! Thanks for hop for senior center. Of course I'm a bit biased. The Town Council is working on next year's budget in the next few months, so we will see what is available for repairs.
DeleteThis is uplifting! We're still in knee-deep snow. Take care!
