Update about blogCa

Who knew all this would happen afterwards! Flat Creek in November, 2024. Much changed by the force of the hurricane floods in Sept. 2024. The deck of the bridge is now under that pile of debris.

Two women and some fowl

From Traces of Texas on FaceBook...

A farm woman with chickens for sale in Weatherford, Texas, 1939.
An utterly classic photo taken by Russell Lee.

The many patched inner tubes next to the car speak of how difficult the roads were, and that tires weren't anywhere near as good as these days.  Chickens were probably going to become dinners to those who bought them, and the serious woman selling them would be able to purchase whatever her family needed.

This is my contribution to Sepia Saturday this week...with a couple of similarities...one woman, fowl in large group, and women in dresses and hats caring for the birds.

Come see what others have come up with based on this photo over at Sepia Saturday.

  1. Hello, these are great photos. I like both, selling the chickens and feeding the swans. Enjoy your day, wishing you a great weekend!

  2. I love your reference to the patched inner tube from the next car, such small details offer so much more information about waht was happening at the time

  3. The patches on that tire and her pocket of different fabric - both are attempts to hold something together in hard times. Great photo.

  4. I love this photo! The camera was still novel enough at that time to gather a crowd, as seen in the two people behind her and other onlookers reflected in the back of the vehicle. Great choice for the prompt!

  5. But were they "free range" chickens? How times have changed! :[]

  6. Terrific choice for our theme. A very evocative image for its time and place. I suppose they could be laying chickens too?
