Earthship homes - right for you?
Treehugger online newsletter has interesting architectural innovations frequently. I have visited the Earthship home site near Taos New Mexico, had a tour, even bought the tee-shirt!
We stayed 2 nights in a B&B built like an earthship. Very comfortable. See this post from 2019 where I gave lots of photos from our tour!
My youngest son and his wife were thinking of getting land in Colorado and building their own home. But bank loans probably pushed them into a conventional house that they are upgrading most of their free time. And Kendra has a wonderful garden from which they eat all summer long.
It's a good idea to use earth as part of walls...filled old tires are within walls that are covered with mud/plaster. Often roofs are also green, but it seems more important to catch rainfall in the southwest.
Today's quote:
The love of one’s country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border? |

...I have visited online too.
ReplyDeleteCool. It's very interesting, and can actually be built (where the zoning permits it!)
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteThey are neat looking homes, I have seen one built on a TV show, maybe Building of the Grid.
Take care, enjoy your day!
Oh that's great that they did a show of building one! Have a happy Friday.
DeleteBarbara, I'd like to actually tour one. I'd be concerned about the lack of natural light though. Darkness can be depressing after a bit. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
ReplyDeleteGood point. Plenty of light in all the ones I've seen. My friend's Earth Ship home in a nearby commune is just one room deep, going along the curve of the mountain...with windows to the south wall where plants can grow. They also used to do an extensive garden below the house on the sides of the ravine, with permaculture techniques to terrace it up.
DeleteInteresting concept for homes. We really ought to be more innovative in our buildings but the mortgage loan companies are wary of anything 'different'.
ReplyDeleteI've come across earth friendly homes, especially on YouTube, where I watched what seemed to be an entire family building in the desert.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite an endeavor.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many amazing homes like this. Many living off the grid and I admire them.
