Old places and some recognition

The Black Mountain library, 2026

Entrance to library 2023. the plantings have been cleared by the Beautification Committee and so no more Harry Lauder Walking Sticks or bulbs which pop up early each year. Now we have staid evergreens.

Black Mountain College Studies Building at Black Mountain College has been named one of just 10 historic places in the United States as part of the World Monuments Fund’s Irreplaceable America list.

A historic building gained "World Monuments" status. It was part of the Black Mountain College.

Sharing with Sepia Saturday

—————

Yesterday I decided to plan to get everything packed quickly and then have a last vacation here.  Why didn’t I think of that before? Lots of reasons, mainly health!

So I struggle along. Work a while. Rest a long while. Feel overwhelmed a lot!

-------------

Talked on phone with my son who reassured me that the wildfires north of his town  are not of any concern, and the one in Mesa Verde National park was contained and put out. That was a relief. I remind myself that he had been a wildland firefighter for the National Forest Service for several years, and for AmeriCorps before that.

And the biggest personal relief, which I really didn't expect, was my son telling me to stop thinking I'm going to be a burden to them. I keep doing that, I guess. It does seem to be in my DNA. So I'm going to be a gift to them. I will arrive with a big bow on top of my head. Mom the gift.

  1. ...it's unfortunate that Black Mountain College had such a short life, it should have lived forever!

    1. It's influence has certainly continued at least. The ideas were excellent and helped with education and the arts.

    1. My friends keep trying to squeeze more events in together before I leave. But I have to have a dentist and a doctor appointment too. We are planning one last picnic though. And of course I am pressured to contain the stuff into moveable boxes!! Not tomorrow, but NOW!!

  3. All of these pictures look familiar to me! I love that my grandsons get to go to camp in the old Black Mountain location. Many of the same buildings. And it's where Jessie and Vergil got married.
I've been in that library and love it! I can generally find a book to buy in their for-sale section. And of course I've passed the train depot many times.
I'm glad that your son straightened you out on how you won't be a burden to them. Yes! Wear a bow! You are indeed their gift.

    1. Oh I didn't know you had that much in common in Black Mountain. That's super special! Of course I hope you get here in time for me to meet you in person for coffee at the Dripolator. Let me know...you've got my email! I'm trying to squeeze as much as possible into my time before I take off on the 22nd.

    1. Well, I'm having to take lots of deep breaths (with a mask if I'm packing) to believe this is finally happening, and that I'm a gift. It makes me cry actually.

  5. My family has always kind of laughed at me for taking so many pictures wherever we've lived, but ever since I joined Sepia Saturday I've been so glad I did. Sometimes I wish I'd taken more. Thanks to the internet, I can often fill in the holes when I find I didn't take a picture of something I wish I had. You have a nice 'look back' posted here. And you really should arrive at your son's with a big pretty bow on your head. Why not? A fun start for your new life! The packing, for it, though, is not so much fun. It's both physically & mentally taxing. Sounds like you're doing it right, however. Pack a little, rest a little, pack a little, rest a lot . . . :))

  7. Black Mountain College will never die! I'm making art, works in many collections in different countries, and one of my mentors was a Black Mountain College artist. That's how it will live.
You've got a few busy days now as you count down. I'm glad your son reassured you, too
