It's National Independent Bookstore Day

April 26th  National Independent Bookstore Day

The way Malaprops looked on my first visit in 2013.

Malaprops 2024, friends finding their books!

Malaprops Bookstore 2025 with one of Asheville's buskers being welcome on the sidewalk in front of the store. (But the guitarist has broken the busker law by not affording 6 feet of walking space in front of him!)

Bookmark from the latest bookstore I visited, in Moab UT.

A few of the purchased bookmarks for friends.

Friends and I have taken day trips to Sylva, NC several times. The City Lights Bookstore is a favorite place to shop, and then we have lunch downstairs!

A good lunch from many hands was shared yesterday at the apartment complex, and I sat with a new person who had similar interests, and lives on the same courtyard as my balcony and downstairs neighbors. I do hope we continue to say hi when we see each other. I managed to bake chocolate chip nutty cookies, by mixing them in the evening, refrigerating the dough, then baking them before the lunch. Of course the dough was too hard to spoon any onto the cookie sheets, so I sliced it with a knife in order to make tiny little cookies. Admittedly I enjoyed the raw dough more than the finished products.

  1. Our town had two bookstores open within weeks of each other. Neither of them survived. There is a small one in the even smaller town to the north. The big one on the fringes of Ottawa is 20 - 25 minutes away.

    1. That's so sad to hear about the bookstores which didn't survive. Unfortunately that happens so often these days.

    1. I wonder if they will serve tidbits of something to celebrate... I don't plan to go to one today either.

    1. And I know you've done readings of your books in each of them! Just never made it to hear you, sorry that my health does that to me, usually in the evenings.

    1. Sometimes going to a bookstore means just browsing, and sometimes buying just the right book. I'm wanting to set aside more spaces of time to read some of the books I already have now!

  5. I''m not sure I can find one close enough to visit. Sad.

    1. We have made "day trips" which include a lunch away, as well as visiting a new bookstore in different towns. Must admit we repeat going to Slyva for City Lights bookstore. But we plan next month to look in new areas for independent bookstores!

    1. It's funny, out of all the touristy shops in Moab, our first stop was that bookstore, and second was a gallery. If we hadn't planned an early Thai dinner, we probably would have had ice cream or afternoon coffee there as well!

  7. Gosh, it's a good job I didn't know it was National Independent Bookstore Day... or I'd have been out spending more money!
