Leaving Cortez with the La Plata Mountains in front of us.
The Sky Ute Casino

Entrance courtyard to museum
The arbor framework finishes the circular entrance court area, much as it would at many indigenous tribes’ pow-wow ceremonies.
Central to the indoor lobby is this totem.
Once we entered the actual museum displays we saw this teepee.
When you sit on the logs a few recorded voices give details about it. This was the technique used throughout the museum.

I enjoyed seeing the construction with all these huge wood columns.
I liked this woman’s dress with cowrie shell decorations but was a bit dismayed to see some plastic beads strung at the hemline. These larger beads didn’t look like glass to me - but I could be wrong.
I had used up my energy by then so missed much of the displays about the Utes after Western Europeans arrived in the area.
Today’s quote:
Your very own inner wisdom should be valued more than any other and will always guide you in the direction you need to travel.
...thanks for taking me along to see the sights. So that's what a blue sky looks like?
ReplyDeleteThere’s a drought here, so many would be y to have a cloudy day.
DeleteA wonderful museum, I love the totem and exhibit.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday! Have a wonderful week!
May I say that 'Ute is Cute'? No? Well, I won't then. Have a nice Sunday.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool place.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fine museum! I always enjoy the one in Cherokee/ the Qualla Boundary.
ReplyDeleteA very long time ago probably 1980 I made a visit to that area as a HUD program officer from DC with the director of the program in Denver. We stayed in Durango but I remember visiting Cortez and it would have been that Tribe to see how they were using their HUD money. There was no museum then. I "retired" from HUD in 1985 to stay home with my kids but as a family in the late 90s we camped near there to visit Mesa Verde. Will you get there too?
ReplyDeleteThat is really cool. A great spot.
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara, We never got over as far west in Colorado as Cortez. We wanted to visit Mesa Verde and 'The Ancients' National Monument but we ran out of time. I definitely would want to visit the Ute Museum! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
