At a drive-through. since nobody was behind me, I took a moment to get where I could stop and smell the roses. Also known as take a photo or two with the phone.
But these modern roses never have any scent, anyway. They are sweet anyway.

President Obama said, "Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11."
When we dumb ourselves down, we sell ourselves short and lose an opportunity to shed light where it is needed.
The hanging impatients are beginning to get sort of scraggly...and so I picked up a medium size purple mum at the grocery store the other day.
The other impatient looks over the African violet that's blooming again, after being out in the summer heat and humidity. I will probably find someplace inside in the winter for these beauties, though they do tax my caregiving urges...just some of the time, though. If I start coughing as soon as they're inside, they will have to be given away or left to freeze. I don't like that they have those very wet planters, and I believe it's harboring some mold too.

PS...more from yesterday actually.
A challenge about patience. Dealing with medical insurance and doctor's offices.
An appointment that I had made maybe 6 months ago, and an echo test on my heart, and I was hoping to get off some of the meds I've been on for over a year. But I found out at 5:30 last evening that my insurance hadn't approved the test that was scheduled, so the Dr. office rescheduled me for Oct...and when I called the insurance people, they said they hadn't received any requests and the needed documents. So today I've been hounded by the same Dr. office that I missed my appointment...but they always say at the end, if you've rescheduled your appointment, please disregard this message.
I'm not even sure they say please.
And I did take a photo of my Chinese take-out yesterday. But forgot to include it, so here it is.
The veggies are in a Tofu Homestyle...though they may call it bean curd. A bit too much oil for my taste, since I now do stir fry without oil. But very yummy.
I think No. stands for Number, but it's always written "No. One." I got the wonderful Tofu Homestyle, and today the stir-fry had a great selection of veggies. Some days it's just broccoli. Not much tofu so far, and I will have left overs for another meal sometime.
The photos above the counter are barely discernable, but my dish isn't up there anyway. It's on the menu, but I never remember the number. And the fastest way to order is by phone. So when I arrived in their parking lot on the east side of Black Mountain, known as the Trucker's Supply parking lot, I called in my order. It used to be the Food Lion parking lot, and a few old timers still say that!
"15 minutes" she said.
So I went inside in 10 minutes, because the hot sun was turning my car into a sauna.
They don't air condition, but now that the counter has plastic all across it, the waiting area (used to be about 6 tables there) is cooler than in the car. And of course she packed up my lunch and took my money through the passthrough door, and put the bag through the other passthrough door. No problem. I was the only one in a mask in the waiting room. I was glad of it, with the 4 burly men waiting on the other side of the small room.
But they've (the owners) even put plastic on the cat, which originally was to be rubbed for luck, I think.

There were two yellow four-o'clocks which volunteered from seeds this year, in with the marigolds. The four-o'clocks are sending their big seeds out to the world right now. Wonder if they'll only be yellow ones...
I've moved my little table which has a folded shower curtain on it to hopefully keep it dry...now there's a violet on it. My little planters with various succulents haven't been doing very well.
They don't get full sun but just indirect light outside this time of year. I'll bring them in for window sills as soon as frost is forecast...maybe in 2 months if I'm lucky like last year!
These huge kalanchoes now sit by my steps. Obviously Miracle-grow makes big leaves grow!
They often get sunburned here by the walk and the stairs, so I'm not sure how long I'll leave them here.
Yes, those are some of my flower pots from my days as a potter.
I think I'll have to bring these inside for winter time. But now is the glorious end of summer, beginning of fall. I like it very much.
Sleeping with the windows open again. Ah. Woke up to no mountains showing because of the fog. But only in the 50s outside. I waited till the 70s showed in the sunshine to walk to where I had to park up the long hill yesterday, to drive my car back down to near my home...so I could load it with a cart full of my laundry. These tiny apartments don't include laundry facilities, and I choose to go to a laundromat rather than use the small machines they have here at Blue Ridge Apartments laundry room. I can put all my clothes, sheets and towels in one machine which handles 30 pounds of laundry there, and the big drier is done in 30 minutes! So I'm trying to psych myself up to going and doing it! And I must remind myself each time I get out of the car to put my mask on!

Time to water the shamrock...and tuck in her dead leaves. I've not had to repot her and she's been in this non-draining bucket for years...just making her own soil out of dead leaves! What a nice gift.
I somehow thought I dropped my phone when backing my desk chair up. Then I couldn't find it anywhere, so got down and looked under the couch. Nope. Now how do I get up from the floor? I must have remembered wrong, cause next thing I knew I was tumbled over on my back with my feet in the air. That didn't hurt, just surprised. But after crawling over to a chair, using elbows on its seat and then getting my feet under me, I saw I'd scraped my knee, and was getting a big bruise all across my left foot...the top of it. But nothing was bleeding, nor swollen. And I could walk. Whew. The phone was over on the table after all that!
I keep wondering how I got up from helping my neighbor out on the sidewalk when she fell last week. Somehow getting up wasn't a problem then! I was up and gone as soon as the EMT's got there. Wish they'd stayed around to help me get up this morning. Oh well. I see I need to practice using the lifting Barbara muscles these days!

I like that they come as buds...sitting on my bedside table...
And within a few hours they start to spread their petals...
And in 24 hours they become full roses...and didn't stop there!
I love the colors of these. But was hoping the centers would be yellow. I'll keep looking for that combo.
Today's quote:
It takes a person of great heart to see…the wisdom the elders have to offer, and so serve them out of gratitude for the life they have passed on to us.
Cathy gave me this bush laden with buds for my birthday (at lunch last week!)
The new gardenia has a place of honor on the corner of the porch, where the most sun will shine on her. The old gardenia bush in is in the foreground, and shows that fertilizer does make for healthy leaves.
And within a week (actually Sunday 8/29) there are all these flowers starting to open!
So one delightful bloom came inside to give me whiffs of her scent at my desk. I am enjoying both the outside ones and the inside one this way!

Perhaps the earliest example of domed architecture, the mammoth huts found in Mezhyrich, Ukraine, could be up to 25,000 years old. “Mammoth House” as shown at the “Frozen Woolly Mammoth Yuka Exhibit” in Yokoyama, Japan in Summer 2013. Photo: NANDARO/WIKIMEDIA COMMONS/CC BY-SA 3.0
Huts built from mammoth bones found along the Dniepr river valley of Ukraine (and also at locations in Moravia, Czech Republic, and in southern Poland) may be the earliest structures built by prehistoric man, and thus the earliest examples of architecture
“They are composed of several hundred bones and tusks arranged in a rough circle, between 6 and 10 m (20 and 33 ft) in diameter. A hearth typically lies near the center of the former dwelling, and stone tools and other debris are scattered within and outside the structure. Large pits filled with stone tools, bone fragments and ash have been found near the houses."

“Considerable effort must have been required to assemble these structures. Even in a dry state, large mammoth bones weigh hundreds of pounds. It has been suggested that the bones and tusks were recovered from hunting episodes in which entire herds of adult mammoth and their young were slaughtered. A more likely explanation is that they were gathered from natural accumulations of bones perhaps at the mouths of streams and gullies near the sites. The primary purpose of the mammoth-bone dwellings which were presumably covered with animal skins, was probably shelter from extreme cold and high winds. Some archaeologists, impressed with the size and appearance of the structures, have argued that they also possess religious or social significance. The have been described as the earliest examples of ‘monumental architecture’ as evidence of increased social complexity and status differentiation during the final phase of the Ice Age.” (Paul G. Bahn (ed) 100 Great Archaeological Discoveries [1995] 54-55)

My friend Cathy met me for lunch for a late birthday...and gifted me this gorgeous huge gardenia bush. It's full of buds! Can't wait till they blossom!
