Some sepia photos for you today

A posed photograph of Victorian tea. Remember the tea party photo in yesterday's post...just a little different costumes!

Hired workers hay making in Economy, Pennsylvania, 1888

Flood in Bat Cave North Carolina 1916 This small community is south of Black Mountain near Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. A good friend's husband had been born there.

What year was this?

"Joseph White Cow Bull (Cheyenne) being painted by Artist David Humphreys Miller. Circa 1938. White Cow Bull was a survivor of the Battle of a Little Big Horn.Mr Miller found 72 survivors of the battle. He learned their language, 13 in all, and ended up painting all 72. He also collected their stories and wrote a book, “Custer’s Fall, The Indian side of the Story.”
He also wrote a book called “Ghost Dance” about Wounded Knee.
While talking to Joseph White Cow Bull, he was told what happened during the battle. White Cow Bull never said he shot Custer, but from the description of the battle, the Horse the rider was on and corroboration from the others he spoke to, he determined it was Joseph White Cow Bull that shot Custer early in the fight. The horse the rider was on had 4 white stockings and Custer’s horse was the only horse with those markings."

The strange sentence about their language, 13 in all...is printed just the way it originally was on Facebook. Sorry, the page renewed and I didn't catch the site which posted it to FB.

My thanks for Facebook publication of all of the above photos.

I forgot to publish this fun video of dancing witches yesterday!

Today's Quote:

Poet Derek Walcott said, “The English language is nobody’s special property. It is the property of the imagination: it is the property of the language itself.”

  4. Hi Barbara, Love those dancing witches! I'm quite pleased at all of the retrospective and introspective reports, books, TV specials and more that are reframing the interactions between European immigrants/settlers and Native Americans. Much of it's sad or even maddening but it does mirror history around the world. Perhaps America's indigenous people can gain a more just place at the table. As for the old postcards picturing history...its why I'm a postcard collector. Not only do I like the history, I like reading the early 20th Century style 'text messages'. As for the local markets, I keep hoping that my better half misses as many of them as possible... Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  6. So much to enjoy in your first photo. Much is different from now and yet much stays the same. We still like to get together for a giggle and a chat over tea.

  8. Loved the Victorian ladies, & that flood was sure something! Wow. Thanks for including the dancing witches :) & the bunnies look cute & cuddly. As for the English language, it's a true wonder it became the world's pretty much go-to language when communication between countries is needed.

  9. Another fine medley! The maples in my neighborhood also decided this week to release their leaves. To answer your question on the photo of the Concorde, the Space Shuttle and its 747 carrier, I believe it was taken in 1983, based on a little Google research. I think the location was London Heathrow too. I was living in London then and saw the Space Shuttle and 747 carrier fly over central London. It was quite amazing to see. Sad that despite their promising technology, none of those aircraft managed to survive into our time.

  10. An eclectic selection of images. My Favourite has to be the tea party - you could compose a story around the women. What brought them together? What are they talking about? What is making them laugh? I want to be part of their group - along with wearing a lovely floral tea dress!!
