In memory of those who died

... so that we might have freedom. And those who died of other causes while serving in the armed forces.

I drive by the Veterans Cemetery almost 3 times a week. This last Thursday I saw all the markers had flags flying over them in honor of Veterans Day today.

And Veterans day also gives me a chance to wish that no armed persons die from any conflicts between nations any more. May we  somehow have peace.

Today's quote:

Once and for all / the idea of glorious victories / won by the glorious army / must be wiped out / Neither side is glorious / On either side they're just frightened men messing their pants / and they all want the same thing / Not to lie under the earth / but to walk upon it / without crutches.

-Peter Weiss, writer, artist, and filmmaker (1916-1982)

Just saying, this is not what I think, but is what my GOP relations do think. Thus it shows how they were convinced that our constitution was threatened by those wanting to have a democracy. These are grown people who studied the same kinds of classes about US History and Civilization that I did in high school. (That's not likely to happen to the next generation however)

I kid you not.

  1. It is a sad day for sure. Just imagine the pain mothers and wives, children had and have. Yet we must be thankful there are soldiers who fight for our freedom.

    1. If only the old men who wage the wars were out on the battlefield.

  2. It's Remembrance Day here and most places in the British Commonwealth. It came upon me suddenly, and I failed to even purchase a poppy.

    1. Wishing we didn't have to remember a war when so many died. (WW I was the first armistice day on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month)

  4. A sad day. Seems weird when people say Happy Veterans Day. I mean, really.

  5. It seems such a small thing to ask, that people might live in peace - but no generation has yet managed it.

    1. There are many women who have studied the likelihood that before patriarchal cultures there were matriarchies existing in peace. This is substantiated by the early cultures not having defensive walls, nor many weapons found beside what could be used for food hunting

  6. A sad day for lots of families remembering their loved ones.

  7. Thank you for this meaningful message. My heart is with you. I'm holding a more positive hope for tomorrow. It is very challenging to change our constitution. And our elections are so decentralized that it would be impossible to really manipulate them. There will be an election in 2 years and disillusioned people can change their mind. Then. Let's keep the faith and honor those who serve. Yes, Aloha to you my friend

    1. Yes, may those who serve now in the various armed forces of all countries be given respect for following the orders they receive, and my hopes that they don't kill each other.

  8. I am so upset with all the lies and deception.
Our opposition leader has been claiming that our Prime Minister didn't allow prayers during the ceremony. What a farce.

    1. Sorry I don't get any of your news here...in our controlled news coverage. Someone suggested having a Canadian Support Person...are you interested? I guess I could offer to be your American Support Person who knows nothing about what's going on. But I listen well!

  9. Love the O’Keefe! Veterans Day is not as sad as Memorial Day. Veterans survived, and many of them were still more or less whole.

Lately I have found it difficult to feel optimistic. I don’t think humankind is programmed for peace. The law of natural selection has rewarded aggression. Aggressive men do terrible things to women in wartime, and this results in their genes showing up in children who are likely to have their unfortunate traits. Even in peace time, aggression is rewarded, often with wealth or power, and the opportunity to reproduce freely.

I suppose I should stop ranting. I’m not in the best mood due to the crushing disappointment of a week ago, plus oral surgery that I had on Friday, which not only left me sore but also on medication that makes me irritable. I tried to take care of myself, and today I felt well enough to go to an exhibit and then shopping, but I came home with very sore feet. Getting older is not easy.
