We drove down to Brevard, and then over US 276 to the parkway, just south of the Pisgah Inn, where we went for a picnic and then desert. Then we drove up the Parkway to Black Mountain...well, close to it exiting on US 70. The Parkway continued all the way to the Mt. Mitchell State Park, but then is still closed further north where it opens again.
There were nice views, but the colors have NOT changed yet (as of Sept. 22, 2025)
People are posting old photos all over the internet to get tourists to come to see the beautiful colors of leaves...it's probably pretty disappointing for them.
Looking Glass Falls is right next to the highway.
There are nice steps going down to the base of the falls, for those who want to climb back up. We didn't.

ReplyDeleteYes, the mountains are old old old, and yet there are plenty of rocks still to stumble over! A lot of wilderness still out there!
DeleteOn our way to Chimney Rock last summer where we were staying, there were several EXTREMELY confusing detours. But we made it eventually.

The road in Chimney Rock was washed away, along with the village! Coming from Black Mountain, and even Hendersonville became impossible...and Lake Lure still needs to be approached from the north-east. I'll not be visiting there any time soon.

DeleteWhat a great road trip, Linda, you were on and we did see some color changes recently in PA on our current road trip. I am wondering if the fall colors will be good in New England as there were not many changes inNH before we left home last week.

DeleteEven though the leaves haven't changed, the place is just gorgeous. Big fan of waterfalls, especially those that can be seen without hiking down and up steep hills!
