Thinking about the week and weekend

From 1913

1892 Columbus Day parade in New York City.

Last Monday was two holidays in the US, one of which was nationally proclaimed, and the other was proclaimed by certain states.

Columbus Day was originally celebrated by Italian immigrants, until it became a national holiday (Oct. 12 for a while, then 2nd Mon. in Oct.) Banks and post offices close. Of course when the US Government is shut down, who knows who's at work.

Indigenous People's day has been replacing Columbus Day by many people who believe that we should recognize and honor the people who were invaded by Columbus. (Maybe not many Italians in this bunch.)

Of course my Canadian friends had their own Thanksgiving Holiday!

The dogwood in the distance gives a bit of color, but my maples are still sadly mostly green. I'm happy the orchid is still blooming.

When I picked up my lunch the other day, I snapped this photo of the lake and some wild flowers. (It feels like I've posted this before, but on a different day...oops.)

Yes, there are pumpkins  for sale in East Asheville. I need to drive downtown in Black Mountain, as they usually have them also.

Yet another view of Lake Tomahawk

Sharing with Sepia Saturday where we see photos from the past, and can post almost anything related or not!

  1. Hello,
Great post and photos. I like the pumpkins and view of the lake.
I hope the No King day is a crowded success!

    1. we have lots going on here in Black Mountain this weekend, the No Kings in the afternoon here, then evening in Asheville. And LEAF, the Lake Eden Arts Festival, a music festival, is all weekend. That means lots of crowds on streets before and after all the events. I'm maybe going out of town for a while!

    1. I guess any conservative readers (maybe both of them) won't like being called weird, or won't relate. But most of my friends will, so thanks, Tom...I'm currently weirding out with blog reading, listening to music on YouTube, and drinking coffee and orange juice. Really weird, eh? (drinks separate from each other)

  3. That photo of the lake with the red leaves is a knock-out.
I'm wondering if I have any conservative readers? I don't think I do.

    1. I do imagine there are some bloggers who are conservative, after all, they seem to be of a generation before XYZ, maybe. And there is the old stereotype that elders Are more conservative. I’m so glad that I know so many that are “liberal” And maybe even weird! I don’t know whether those terms have any correlation…

  4. I think the conservative readers have long since given up reading my blog. Hope you manage to get to No Kings Day for a bit. I think this one will be bigger than the last one. In fact there was no rally last time in the town we are going to tomorrow for No Kings.

    1. I’m looking forward to seeing all your photos from tomorrow’s gathering. Makes me wonder what the ICE people will be doing tomorrow.

  6. That opening photo heading your blog is gorgeous! So are all your other landscape photos. Columbus Day has really lost its meaning since we discovered he was not the first to discover the American continent. the Vikings were here - in the north - long before Columbus. But, oh well. I like the idea of Indigenous People's Day, & I'm looking forward to No Kings Day tomorrow! Right on!!!
