I gave a brief photo of this little pocket park in Berea, where I stopped to stretch my legs on the way north. But I want to share these while I’m already on my drive back home.
The sign is a bit difficult to read, but speaks of the early efforts for integrated education in the area…which was outlawed in 1903 in Kentucky, then finally became legal again in the 1950s.
The town is known for art festivals and the private liberal arts college, Berea College, founded in 1855. The arts and crafts community is known throughout the south.
Someday maybe I’ll tour more of the town and college!

Happy December everyone. I’m sharing foxes instead of rabbits to wish you good fortune!
I noticed people who read my blog on their phones miss seeing the headers. So I’ll add them as footers!

I'd like more about Berea, if you've got it. Including the source of its name?
ReplyDeleteNo idea, I just drove into town, walked around, then drove on my way.
DeleteHappy December to you Barb! I love your header photo!
ReplyDeleteThe sculptures are wonderful, looks like a nice place for your stop.
Take care, have a happy day and a great week!
Happy holidays...my goal to share joy with others, at the season of darkness and the political status of turmoil.
Delete...we have a skittles game made at Berea College.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever played skittles. Isn't that a candy?
DeleteGreat picture. Berea College is also known to have good financial aid for disadvantaged kids making it possible for them to go to college.
ReplyDeleteThat's great to hear about!
DeleteThat is a delightful picture of you, and what an interesting goddess today.
ReplyDeleteYou can't possibly get us confused!
DeleteThat is the cutest picture of you! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI have heard of Berea State College. What an interesting school!
I see from that goddess that our culture is not the only one which prizes and prized large and very firm looking breasts. Oh my!
I made a sculpture of a mountain nude, where she was like the Grand Tetons, once. It was really hard to make the breasts small enough to be believable. I've since tossed it, because it just didn't look realistic.
DeleteWe used to drive from Lake Erie to Renfro Valley (the exit past Berea) Kentucky for bluegrass concerts. Our first visit to Berea was in the winter and we loved it. There are lots of craft stores during the Christmas season and I remember a railroad depot. During summer visits we would walk the campus and eat in cute restaurants. It is a fun place! I don't remember the statues, I will have to go back through my pictures.
ReplyDeleteOh that's great, so you should share more photos from Berea! And I am glad to hear you had a fun time in different visits there! Wish I had more time this visit.
DeleteSafe driving home. Oh, maybe you've arrived there already. Is Berea College an HBC? It sounds familiar to me but maybe it's a college we played when I went to Wooster College in Ohio.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I don't know what an HBC means. Thanks for good wishes. Since I got home this afternoon, I just put the laptop back on the desk, and am about to read blogs, and comments here!
DeleteFun photo of you, Barbara! Love your cozy warm looking coat. The Berea School was before its time with its wonderful history!
ReplyDeleteI was really glad to bring my puffy coat north with me, for several times when it was either freezing or blowing cold out there! I have always heard good things about Berea College, and now have learned a bit more about it's beginnings.
DeleteBerea is a gem of a town in Kentucky with some great history.
ReplyDeleteThe little Michoacan goddess is a treat!
ReplyDeleteI’ve heard of Berea College and it’s famous graduates. That’s a neat little goddess!
ReplyDeleteThe park looks quiet.
