Center for the Arts

Last weekend was the Art in Bloom affair, the major fund raiser for our Center for the Arts here in Black Mountain. My friends and I attended just the gallery on the second day of the displays. We skipped the garden tours which were going on Friday and Saturday.

While people paid much more to attend the opening the night before, and got some wine and snacks for their money, I figured the air conditioning had kept most of the blooms happy overnight until Friday.
Yes, they not only looked great, there was a fabulous natural floral scent in the lobby at the top of the stairs. I may ooze a bit about that again.

My friends and I met for a late coffee, and chatted and munched to get to the art enjoyment.

As we were about to enter the Art Center, I asked them to pose for a photo. Their silliness allowed someone else to get inside ahead of us (which was no problem as the galleries weren't all that crowded.)

OK, that's more like it. Teresa's granddaughter was off school this week, and she took the opportunity to teach her the names of flowers (with some help from Helen (on right) and myself behind the camera.

I took photos of just about all the displays. But this year rather than giving a whole bunch at a time, I'll just post one for the beginning of each blog for as long as they last.

Many of my friends from the community ceramic studio offered vases for the silent auction.

My silly hat cut into Teresa's face! I get so comfortable wearing it (hat) I forget to take it off when I get home!

    1. I'm really fortunate to have such light-hearted friends. This exhibit might have been smaller than the Asheville Museum, but the quality was very good!

  2. Looks like a fine time enjoyed by all. I am intrigued by the pots on the steps. Is there any info about them?
Like the hat.....not silly at all!🤭

    1. Sorry, I don't know a thing about the pots on the steps. They came at the same time as our new (several years ago now) director. So I guess they have some connection to her. Me too, loving my hat!

  3. I think you're a lot of fun to go places with! The idea of offering hand thrown vases in the auction is so Black Mountain.

    1. True, and the display is front and center this year, where in the past they've been poorly lit on a hallway to the bathrooms. They should earn the center some good change.

  6. I love outings like that, and with friends - even better. The floral arrangements mirroring the artwork is really clever. I admire anyone who can manipulate flowers and foliage into doing what they want!

    1. I've been there when the floral designers are busy with carts full of tubs of flowers, the parking lot is crazy, and how they create these beautiful arrangements is beyond me!

  8. When my sister was alive and doing the nature programs at Hesed House here she arranged for a hands on lecture and try it yourself on Ikebana. It was a lot of fun. Everyone brought stuff and so did the two women giving the workshop. I really like the arrangement in the previous post with the calla lilies.
