The western North Carolina residents feel quite different than they did before last September 27.
After Hurricane Helene the interstates into Asheville from Tennessee took a long time to be repaired. I-40 had a tricky river (the Pigeon River) next to it through a river gorge. It only was given one lane going each way as the Corps of Engineers tried to push the river back into a narrow gorge, opening again in March I think.
Last Wednesday, lots of mountain rain took back some of the roadway with mudslides and flooding. So I-40 is again closed to traffic to and from Tennessee into western North Carolina. I'm reminded of the line in "Out of Africa" - something like "these waters belong to ...(Tennessee)... they were never our waters."
There's a great FB video someone posted that I'll give you the link to...if possible, as it was happening.
I'm pretty sure that's not a heron or crane on the far side of the river. Sorry (not my photo!)

Thanks to DOT and Facebook for these updates. The long detours will not be fun.
I'm so so sorry. It just seems like you have been through enough before. You didn't deserve this. I can't imagine the frustration and disappointment.
ReplyDelete...rain is a wonderful thing, too much isn't.
ReplyDeleteIt looks as if Helene permanently altered the terrain. I wonder if they'll have to redesign the highway.
ReplyDeleteAnd the rain will continue to give that area problems, I imagine.
ReplyDeleteWe keep getting rain in Georgia too but to think of detouring around an interstate, that is going to be such a headache there. Stay safe and remember that phrase, "turn around, don't drown". These floods are scary.
ReplyDeleteIt’s like deja vu all over again. I hope nothing worse happens.
ReplyDeleteThat road has always been problematic.
