Walking when the clouds cooled it off enough

 I have yet to get into the early morning walking habit. So I was very glad that I could take off my hat and not slather sunblock on my arms, since big clouds rolled in just as I wanted to walk at the Community Gardens. Last post of a visit was in "Living in Black Mountain NC" in April.

I hadn't been in quite a while...and things looked very lush. But let me just show you!

And at this point...just when I was going to download the owner of this fuzzy stuff's name...the computer froze when I was trying to capture the next iPhoto! But having had this frustrating problem before...I know I can email the photos to my computer from the phone...and actually make them smaller files at the same time!

So, voila!

Russ is the owner of these interesting veggies!

I'll share a few more tomorrow! There are many really beautifully garden plots.

Back at the gardens

 

On the Community Garden side of the horse's pasture.

A very productive looking garden patch.

Another garden with many little seedlings planted.

After several inches of rain last night, it was good to see the water had gone down on the Swannanoa here...when I drove along the same river down in Asheville later that day, it was still rushing higher than normal. I guess we are close enough to the dam in Montreat, our water comes more slowly.

I'm thinking of mustard.

It's so nice to see well organized beds.

More of gardens in sunshine

 

Not a very clear photo, but this is a bag of seed potatoes I donated to the garden. Basically organic potatoes, the smaller ones which started growing in the cupboard!

Growing here since 1850...which  is when people were probably just coming into this valley.

The barn. Here a path goes either to the left at the eastern lower side of the garden, or straight and up the hill on the end of the garden, or left along the river.

OK, it really doesn't look like a Forsythia...

Sort of goodbye shots to the horses. I didn't talk to them, because there are signs saying not to disturb them.

Community Gardens from early March

That week it was sunny but cold. No rain for over a week. But the cold still was keeping most people out of gardens. 

I liked there was a sand box for kids.

These green and purple plants looked like they had survived the winter, and perhaps had been picked over a bit.

I would wonder if there aren't some onions or garlic under these long leaves...

These looked like small beets which had started to sprout, but left on top of the ground...very strange!

Some pretty new looking green growth...but I don't know what.

Ah ha...someone has weeded this bed.

Same bed, looking at some pretty green and purple plants...not sure what they are, but pretty hardy.

Further along the well weeded bed...

The tall bamboo structure was one of my reference points as I wandered around.

I was impressed that quite a few of the beds which had had the plastic covering had some things growing in them.

I always try to capture blue flowers...and these tiny little guys were hard to see.

Are you bored yet? How about this little Asian style lantern over on its side? At least the soil has been turned recently here.

I liked this brick edging. The owners of this plot not only have prepared the soil, they've put out new plants.

I can't wait to see all the work that may be ahead...

The Forsythia (I think) was about to bloom. I should go back soon and capture its beauty!

I thought this had been published here in this blog. But it was lined up over in another blog completely! I certainly wouldn't have done that. I wonder if this has happened to anyone else who publishes more than one blog...

Community gardens part 2

 

Looking to the other side of the tunnel system under I-40...the river goes through on the far right, the walk goes through on the far left.

Nice to see a waystation sign for Monarch butterflies...I didn't read the fine print, so don't know exactly what that entails!

I keep loving this view of the Swannanoa River, so I take a new shot each visit. They probably all look like the same photo!

Fun skies over the distant mountains.

One woman was working with some compost to the left side of the gardens.

There may be a few winter crops, or early spring started.

I can't wait to come back and see what everyone plants. I don't get up and down any more, so all my plants will be in pots on my porch!

The target of all the Frisbee Golfers...who certainly were out walking around throwing their little discs.
