What is this? I just found it saved in my iCloud photos...and I didn't take it! How could someone else's photo get saved there? Well, that's my Monday morning dilemma, while drinking my coffee and reading a few blogs and emails. I'm getting ready to go to the dermatologist this morning for my yearly exam. Whoopee!
The neighborhood slowly awakens to dawn. 41 degrees F. Due to be sunny today.
Yesterday my maples treated me to swinging in the breeze...as I awoke these long limbs just swayed every which way with the gusts of wind. It was estimated by Weather Channel at 17 mph...but these were surprising gusts coming through. What a symphony of movement.

DeleteContranym is the word that I can never remember. My fav is ‘peruse’ which didn’t make the list. I once heard them described as Janus words (two faces opposite directions) and I always remeber that rather than the proper name.
ReplyDeleteMeaning 1: To read carefully or in detail. This is the traditional meaning, as in, "The lawyer will peruse the contract for any errors".
Meaning 2: To skim or read casually. This is a more modern, informal usage, as in, "I'll just peruse the headlines before I leave".
In my life, I have usually used it in the second and less correct sense.
Yes, I read that peruse has those different meanings, or rather the more modern is incorrect according to dictionaries...on another list somewhere. Now is it a contranym just by usage, or misuse? I wonder. So glad I grew up with English, I really feel sorry for those who have learned it as a second language!

Always love definitions of common words that are generally used in the wrong context. I have a friend who makes up words and uses them as factual language...amusing. LOVE the last quote! "Where would we be without women?" We wouldn't.
