From Black Mountain to Swannanoa

by Van Gogh

Once a week the food bank brings produce, bread, and eggs to distribute to the senior residents at Blue Ridge Apartments. Many of them don't drive. It's quite an occasion to line up and socialize, especially in good weather.

Over at Lake Tomahawk...

Did you know North Carolina's state flag has dates on it for a declaration of independence prior to the US one?

Wikipedia says: It bears the dates of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (May 20, 1775) and of the Halifax Resolves (April 12, 1776), documents that place North Carolina at the forefront of the American independence movement.

The pool is shrouded for the winter, while the construction project on the house in the background seems to go on and on. I wonder when they'll have the exterior finish put in place!

A rainy day to share an Americano and meet a friend at the Dripolator.

We were lucky to get a table.

The following shots are of simple homes in Swannaoa.

Grovemont Park is a great gathering place for the community.

My friend Judy lives in this nice little house.

Sharing with "Almost" wordless Wednesday on Tuesday and My Corner of the World.

  1. Having seen Hautes Vienne in a hot August..I know that Arles is further South... Vincent van Gogh captured the light..and the house.. perfectly. I like Judy's house too!
I'm surprised that the food bank has to distribute to seniors? It is good that you have good places to gather

    1. Many seniors have food insufficiency. Meals on Wheels delivers a hot meal M-F to quite a few who live in this apartment complex.

    2. Thank goodness for Meals on Wheels. We have it in Ontario, too. Not just for food insecurity, but for seniors who cannot cook.

  2. A lovely collection of photos and words. I am glad the seniors have help that they need.
Take care, have a great day!

    1. There are other senior complexes nearby where there are no seniors in need, rather they are offered a meal plan in a dining room (for a price) as well as care in Assisted Living or Nursing levels available as needed. The price to live there is quite high however.

    1. It's always important to me, rain or shine. I guess you refer to having warmth and shelter...which I do appreciate any time.

    1. Yes, that is definitely the message of that last photo.

  6. I didn't make any statements about Veterans Day because I'm a pacifist. In remembering, may we try to see the brotherhood of man, that those who we fight against are no different than we are. Each person who is injured or dies in a conflict against another ideology has that to consider. Each country or sect represents those who are identical to the other, with only their leaders giving different meanings for giving their young men and women to fight each other. We are all our mother's children...no matter the language or beliefs we have.

    1. Edit note: last sentence should read, "leaders giving different meanings for GETTING their young... to fight each other."

    1. That’s why I showed just ordinary houses today rather than any mansionsS!

  8. So true about being the steward of a house. It shows respect to those who dreamed it, planned it, built it.

    1. That's a wonderful term, stewardship. And maybe an artist like Van Gogh will come along and paint a picture of it too!

  10. It is so nice that the local food bank delivers to seniors. That is surely a blessing for them

  11. The quote about a house and not needing to upgrade - that hits home. A cozy comfortable house is enough. Love the food delivery and the social time.

  12. SNOW!!!??? Winter is certainly eager! Beautiful park- your area is that way isn't it? beauty all around. repairing a home is a sort of upgrade- better paint better appliances better decking- and now we have a better garage door, though it requires an App to open it . That is annoying!

  13. I enjoyed these photos, Barb. Your corner of the world is quite photogenic. And I especially like that last quote. I have friends who go into debt---at our age!---to update their kitchens. Seems very foolish to me.
