Groceries (and gas) cost more in Durango than they did in Black Mountain NC. So rather than paying $7 for a loaf of mixed grain bread, I baked some. I found my dried buttermilk which was packed in a U-Haul truck had baked into a hard cake of something inedible, so I just used water instead. My bread was kind of thrown together without a recipe, but it is tasty.
I found some more Elena Wuest paintings on this YouTube. No more cats though!

ReplyDeleteIt's finally cooler here, with a high of 83 expected today! The nighttime low was 51, about an hour ago. I have my windows open to fresh mountain air! Finally enjoying what I came here for! (Well, one of the things!)

Saturday dawned nice a cool and with a few clouds scuttling over. Windows thrown open, deep breaths of fresh cool air! I added a YouTube of some of Wuest's art work.
DeleteSome people love to see deer in their yards. While we have deer out here, my daughter has seen some on her property, I'm glad they aren't here in my little neighborhood. They eat everything.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised to see deer in urban settings still. The folks here apparently just think of them as a nuisance. I'm used to bears, and come to find out, they're also interested in garbage cans here too!

ReplyDeleteHumidity goes up a bit at night, but our sunny days (mostly) are dry. I think this area is always somewhat dry.

DeleteI love the "Caws for Concern" painting, it's a beauty. The bread is pretty spendy so that's good that you made your own. We make our bread in the slow cooker.

ReplyDeleteShe certainly did a great job on that painting...but there weren't any more cats in the YouTube collection I found. I need to purchase more bread flour, though all purpose flour works well...and I always add a bit of whole wheat for better flavor.
Delete"Necessity - the mother of invention" describes you and your bread. Cooler temps here now in NH. We will have lows in the 40s in days ahead.

DeleteI need to get another breadmaker. Your bread looks delicious. I have found that the good bread at the store is usually half price on Monday and Tuesday, so I try to get in there to get it then. Can't afford bread that is $5 or $6 a loaf.
ReplyDeleteOh my yes...I haven't quite figured out the cost difference, but I think a few loaves baked in the bread machine will allow me to afford a croissant with a coffee whenever I go to a coffee place...it's on my list and near the top. I just got a bunch of free range eggs at a sale at the organic grocery, so will be making a quiche pretty soon! And omelet, and and and...

DeleteFor several years I baked bread the "old fashioned way". I finally gave away my bread machine AND my mother's bread machine that I inherited. I really wish I still had a bread machine.
