Some Holiday decorations

Sassafras on Sutton offers a decorated tree.

The trees decorated by businesses and various community groups used to be displayed in the Monte Vista Hotel...but now are throughout the town. When they were displayed side by side, we would vote on the ones we liked by putting dollars in their little gift contribution boxes. But it is hoped this way more will be donated. Not as much fun trying to see all the trees though!

Three Gnomes and a larch!

Some of our beautification committee got inspired!

And just look, AC, I now know what a larch looks like!

A tree in a window at Town Hardware

The Seven Sisters Mountains are decorated a bit with snow. More may be on its way!

Last week some goodies were left from a weekend event, and were offered with lunch as part of our pickups.  I needed them like a hole in the head!!

My branch from my Ohio son's tree...and some goddesses.

Winter Solstice is 6 days away!

Today's quote:

I went to a storytelling performance About Hanukkah stories yesterday afternoon. I was surprised to see The auditoriumhalf empty. They’re also were no decorations or examples of menorahs or Dreidels on display. Instead The entrance and lobby were completely focused on Christmas. I recognized some Jewish people in the audience That I knew. And it wasn’t until I saw the news at home about the shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia of a Jewish Hanukkah celebration that I realized maybe people were afraid to be in public with interest in Judaism.  A newsman did a video interview And commented to me about the lack of any Decorations related to Hanukkah with that being the topic of the performance. It didn’t make for good video. The Black Mountain center For the arts Failed some of its best supporters.

Today's the birthday of The Bill of Rights of the US Constitution. See the background and George Mason's contribution on Open Yesterday's Pages.

There are so many horrific stories of violence from yesterday. May all the families of those hurt or killed find some solace while grieving, and may we all support one another for better laws, better gun control, and better education and mental health support for those disillusioned souls who think that killing is the way for them to express themselves.

Sad at loss of Rob Reiner, so here's a photo of the cast of The Princess Bride.

  1. About time that people realised that all the Abrahamic religions are related and respect the same prophets.

Plus they also have elements in common with many other beliefs

    1. Art is certainly the place where different ideas and beliefs can be shared...and artists tend to be an open minded group, on the whole. Sad to hear all the killings of innocents still are happening these days, especially when related to their religious beliefs.

  2. Sounds like you saw a good example of lip service. Very sad.

    1. Most of the people involved in the performance were Jews. But I guess they weren't thinking about any visual displays. Certainly the Center for the Arts people missed the boat.

  3. Hello,
I love all the decorated trees, the mural and the cookies look yummy.
It is nice to donate when you can, I am sure people need help with food and fuel for heating.
Take care, stay warm! Have a great day and happy week ahead.

    1. It's always good to see your positive comments early in my day! It was 11 F when I got up at 7:30 this morning. Very glad to have good heating systems...finally!

  4. Our larches are looking spindly and forlorn.

Too bad about the silly prejudice toward Jews. It has almost always been thus.

    1. I wonder if this larch will denude itself soon. Since it's definitely very cold right now, there's a good chance. The world-wide intolerance of other's religious beliefs is very sad.

  5. I love the word larch. So elegant! But that lack of Hannukah observance definitely doesn't make it. Not okay.

    1. The holiday of Hanukkah is not as important in Judaism as Christmas is to Christians - but this was probably an added event without much support by the admin of the Center for the Arts. Sad, definitely.

  6. Great initiative with the Christmas trees donation appeal. It's sad that Jewish people were afraid to commemorate Hanukkah due to the Sydney attack. Sad times all over the world with all the wars and prejudice going on!

    1. I just mentioned that Hanukkah isn't as important to Jews as Christmas is to Christians...and that this storytelling probably was a first time event without the incentive of the admin of the Center. I think I am guessing about the Bondi Beach attack having any influence, and yet, maybe people were just too occupied purchasing Christmas presents to come to hear these stories.

    1. It's very well done, though not easily seen, being on an alley which I didn't even know existed!

  8. The news was not good this weekend. Difficult to even comment on what those who put on the Hanukkah event were thinking/feeling.

    1. I'm glad they made an effort to have story telling about Hanukkah. I guess I felt pretty critical after it was a kind of lame event. But perhaps there will be improvements.

    2. Barbara, the ceramic tree pictured on my blog post has holes for little colored plastic (?) inserts. There's a light bulb inside that then shines through the colors.

    3. Thanks for the explanation. I'd thought each light was a bulb. My mistake!

    1. I'm talking to family and friends about my feelings over the recent deaths of people who should have still been alive today. It's all that was on the news tonight...actually better than hearing about politicians. But not the change of subject I would have wished for.

    1. The sadness and events which continue to bring it to my emotions are things which I can accept with difficulty, while still working (sometimes very hard) to see the good in the world.
