Water is the theme!

I'm reminded of how popular getting in the water is this time of year!

Time to scroll through some memories already shared a long time ago. My St. Louis MO family came from Houston TX, so the hot humid summers did require lots of fans, but we survived. But one year we also took a real family vacation (Here) to Black River Lodge.

I offer the photos from that enjoyable pastime in the crystal cold shallow waters.

Around 1954-56 (not as early as 50 when my little sis, shown here would have been just 4...she's at least 6-8 here.) I'm on the far right in the bathing cap, thus of an age (by 11-12) when I put my hair in rollers at night already...for the next **-teen years!

Yes, Black River Lodge is still in business. Here's their link.

Now I'm more relaxed, stretched out on the float with my sunglasses on also!

Mom didn't go in the water once...but apparently had some good books to read. It wasn't until later, when I invited her to visit me in Miami FL during my first home-away-from home that she wore a swim suit and went into the ocean. I'm not sure if she could swim, now that I think about it.

Dad had shorts so he decided to wade. But apparently his ankles were all that got wet...it was a bit deeper in other spots! We took turns using the Brownie box camera!

And here I floated with my ears uncovered by the dratted bathing cap!

Sharing with Sepia Saturday this week!

    1. All teens in the 50s-60s wore brush curlers to bed so they would have a beautiful bouncy bob in the morning. Heaven help us when we had swimming for PE and, even wearing bathing caps, we looked like drowned rats. I wish I had a cup of your cold weather...it's so exhausting for me to be out in this heat.

  4. Great pictures. Ah yes - the bathing cap! The pool near our home required them of girls & round about the age you mentioned for yourself is about when I, too, started wearing one any time I was in the water for the same reason - wanting my hair to stay dry so it would look nice. Your Mom sitting in a lounge chair in a dress had me smiling. But hey, however she felt comfortable! :)

    1. I don't think my mom even owned shorts or slacks at that time. She may or may not have had a girdle on. I sure hope not!

  5. I am now remembering that I liked the water. I would go in the pool with my grands, maybe more than 10 years ago. I have probably swum at the cottage sometime since but maybe not as we tended not to go in summer. We preferred autumn visits when the bugs had dissipated.

    1. There are bugs to consider, and the poisonous stuff we have to wear in evenings to keep them from biting. I think most mosquitoes were no problem during the daytime, after all it was moving water, they like standing water.

  6. I remember these pictures you shared from years ago. Even in black&white they retain a quality of cool, refreshing water. Perhaps it is the reflections off of the clear water that invite us to dip a toe in, too :—)

  7. How poignant! My late parents took swim lessons at age 50! I was so proud of them. They were 35 when they bought the cottage.

  8. From Scotsue - i enjoyed sharing your happy family memories in water. Oh how I wish for some of your warmth! Here in the UK we are experiencing one of the coldest, wettest so called “summers” on record!
