Saturday morning, Jan 31, snowing still after the first 8 hours or so. It stopped in another 7 hours. But there was no visual evidence of the ridge on the other side of the valley!
Sunday morning, the mountain on the other side of the valley is visible, and sun has come out again! It was only 7 F degrees however.
And then it started to melt, of course. By Tuesday it got above 40 in the afternoon.
Before: A neighbor across the holler seems to have not cleaned out his chimney, but the billows of smoke did finally die back. I worried that the whole house might go up.

Bridge seen in the distance in the lower shot is the Blue Ridge Parkway. Skyline Inn in Little Switzerland has been in operation since the 1940s. See my blog post which included older photos.
June 2024 the hotel continues operation, but the floods and landslides of Hurricane Helene closed it at the end of September 24. The hotel is open again now.

such quick change as the temperature fluctuates.
ReplyDeleteand flood devastation...
I’m calling this winter as an old fashion winter, rather than our newer kinds with climate change. But of course this one is also related to CC.
DeleteWe are lucky to have one day in the 40's most days are below freezing.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos showing the before and after!
Have a great day and a happy weekend.
Thanks, and I agree, we look forward to days when the temp gets higher. Right now my faucets are dripping because it’s been below freezing all night and still is, but there may be a few hours of warmth before the next cold front comes our way.
Delete...I love flatiron buildings and the flatiron sculpture is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteMe too. I wonder how many cities have them. I know I’ve seen at least 2 more (photos that is.)
DeleteInteresting old and recent photo compares. And the winter mountain shots.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Finding these kinds of things also.
DeleteGreat idea for a theme.
ReplyDeleteThat is true!
DeleteI've always wondered about flat iron buildings, if they're built on a cheap piece of land, awkward shape.
ReplyDeleteI think they’re very central and most of the locations I’ve seen them – think about Times Square!
DeleteIt's probably silly but I do so enjoy seeing pictures here of places and things I recognize from our travels to NC in the summers.
ReplyDeleteThere's a flatiron building in Chattanooga. I've seen it.
Which ones of these sites have you visited? Inquiring minds want to know! And I didn’t know about the Flat iron building in Chattanooga thank you.
DeleteSo many interesting "before and afters" but the "Hard Truth" statement in particular makes one stop and think. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is true!
DeleteI love comparing old photos to current times. That's a wonderful quote!
ReplyDeleteI liked that Sepia Saturday encourages us to post different kinds of old pictures!
DeleteVery interesting contrasts.
ReplyDeleteChanges in weather or changes through time – both can be observed.
DeleteI agree - comparing photos of the same locations decades apart is so interesting.
ReplyDeleteIsn’t it fun?
DeleteBeautiful view of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Love the hard truth quote, it's so true and good to remember.
ReplyDeleteThanks – I’ve blended some of my own photos with things that I found on the Internet – including the quote!
DeleteLove the NC pictures.
ReplyDeleteCrazy weather there too. We will see the mid-50s this week, but tonight it will be 4!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this series of photos. So interesting to see how places change.
You had far more snow than we did in Asheville. It's pretty to look at but the bitter cold has been worse this season. Before the big storm our neighbors had a chimney fire that fortunately was quickly put out by the fire department. The used the big ladder truck stretched out at a low angle to get to the roof. It was spotted by someone out walking who noticed sparks and thick smoke coming out the top. No harm done but a lesson learned I think. I hope spring will return soon to Black Mountain.
ReplyDeleteAmazing how weather really affects our lives, especially severe weather.
