I'm Miss Rogers.
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood...won't you be my neighbor? (Imagine I'm right by Mr. Rogers with a funny tinkling tune playing on TV)
The town was called Grey Eagle until the railroad named it Black Mountain. I do wonder what that antenna goes to...there aren't any radio stations nearby, and there's already one up on the police/fire station. But probably more trouble to take it down than just leave it there, wrecking pretty photos!

Details for tourists
Only if you park, or are walking on the sidewalk, might you read about Buckminster Fuller's first geodesic domes being built (several miles away) at Black Mountain College 1948/49. The placement of this marker is bizarre, next to US Highway 70 where cars are traveling 40 mph.
A young Buckminster Fuller standing on a skyscraper.
He said: "It is now highly feasible to take care of everybody on Earth at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. It no longer has to be you or me. Selfishness is unnecessary. War is obsolete. It is a matter of converting our high technology from Weaponry to Livingry."
An extra large colander, which I still have and use seldom since I don't eat much pasta. Maybe I'll plant an orchid in it!
Hello Barb,
ReplyDeleteI love your header photo. Great captures and views from Black Mountain.
The colander is pretty. Take care, have a great day!
Thanks Eileen...glad to see your comment early this morning.
DeleteInteresting tour!
ReplyDeleteI sure like that Buckminster Fuller quote. If only the world had listened!
Beautiful colander. You made some real art, Barb. Useful art, the kind I like!
That's why I kept reading his books...what a mind he had!
Delete...signs can teach us so much. I forgot that Buckminster Fuller was at Black Mountain College. that was quite the place in its day!
ReplyDeleteI've learned about it, and driven around the campus (which is of course no longer a college) but still need to go to Asheville to the museum about Black Mountain College.
DeleteWe heard Fuller speak in person years ago. He was quite amazing.
ReplyDeleteI drove many miles to hear him speak once also.
DeleteWhen I retired the teacher who taught next to me likened me to Mr Rogers in his farewell speech about me.
ReplyDeleteOh I knew there was something I liked about you!
DeleteYou got a lovely neighborhood
ReplyDeleteThanks. I am very grateful to have found this little area.
DeleteI remember seeing geodesic domes here and there. I wonder why they never caught on?
ReplyDeleteThey leaked! Builders hated them. Around here, fuller a local, there were quite a few, all with buckets everywhere on rainy days. Maybe best for a desert climate.
DeleteSeems an interesting place to visit.
ReplyDeleteBuckminster Fuller was a smart man, but apparently he did not realize how incredibly selfish people are. Or perhaps it is due to how fearful they are. And today we have media making people more fearful just to get clicks or sponsors. I’m terribly disappointed in humanity.
