I'm crazy for iris...in someone else's yard

Sun hitting the velvet petals was captivating.

My first walk up the hill had these beauties as my reward.

Soon there will be peonies also.

The pale blues pale (ahem, sorry about that) in comparison to the dark oranges.

And here's the first Peony which opened a week later.

  1. Hello,
There are not many flowers that I do not love, they are all so pretty. Our irises are not blooming yet, I wish I had a peony growing in my yard. Take care, have a happy day!

  2. ...iris are a gorgeous group of plants, but their blossoms last such a short time.

    1. That's true. Then you think about tulips, which don't really last any longer, and they don't get to stay in the ground and multiply like iris do. Spring flower bulbs are fun to plant.

    1. I had a neighbor who was so happy to have moved into a house with a yard that she planted just about every iris that was in a catalog, over the whole back yard...so on the spring when she moved away I went over and took photos of every last one. The next people who moved there just had kids and needed the yard with grass. I hope someone dug out the iris first.

  5. Barbara, We do have a few iris in our yard but no peonies. Our azaleas are done for the season...They were pink, red and white. Our rhododendron is just blooming now as our some small roses. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

    1. I've lived in several houses with iris...and made a big boo boo by cutting back peonies that were falling all over my sidewalk to an apartment, and the landlord wasn't happy with me. They hadn't bloomed while I'd lived there...moving in Sept. and apparently they didn't bloom that spring either.

  6. y mother always had irises growing in her front yard. I to grow them learned that deer don't eat them but I don't have enough full sun in my front yard. I had to transplant peonies form the front to the back for more sun last year and they are just beginning to grow. We had a lot of rain the past lately and everything is very beautifully green.

    1. That sounds like a good plan...having enough sun for the peonies, and probably iris too.

  7. I love bearded irises; I have them in lavender and deep purple.

  8. I'm naturally biased because my mom always had iris in the backyard, the gorgeous blue ones like in your photos. The neighbors had peonies, always covered in ants. Probably why I've never cared for them. A house I walk by now has what look for all the world like black ones in their front yard. Probably just an extremely dark purple, but black is the impression.

    1. One of my neighbors has lots of iris (the blue kind) near the road, but they don't seem to be blooming at all this year. I wonder why. I've never seen them skip a spring.
