Metagraywacke and amazing big rocks (mountains)


 If you have no interest in geology, just skip this post. We visited the museum on Mt. Mitchell, and I only took a few photos. It was definitely user friendly with lots of gadgets to push, wind, pull or turn.




The monument on top of the mountain, which has been replaced by a big platform with lots of explanations of what you're looking at.


Yes, I've posted about climbing to the platform, and looking at each direction to see which peaks were out there. It's really kind of fun at the moment, but later on sort of boring.


I loved this rock's name!



I did pick up a piece of gravel at the picnic area, which of course is illegal in state parks, I guess. But it also could have come from miles away and been trucked in there.

The town of Black Mountain is about 15 miles due south of Mt. Mitchell as the crow flies. Of course I've never flown it, but drive along the parkway to get there, about 30 miles or so that way.


Manipulative Republicans posted such stupidly hilarious photos of a dying (or perhaps brain dead) senator...as well as this contrived AI three-armed wife and 6-fingered man! The video of him break dancing is really hilarious. All for the love of power of majority votes. What kind of people do this?



Power is not about exerting our will over others, it is about being in complete truth with yourself.

    See that you posted this a 3:00 AM. There is some comfort in seeing that I am not the only one awake at odd hours. I have not really been following the World Cup brouhaha but the last sign is 'truer words were never spoke'

      Yawn, I was sound asleep (thank goodness) at 3 am. I just set the time of posts ahead for 3 am each day. My usual wakening is at 4, but often I can get back to sleep and I'm grateful when I do.

    Geology is fascinating, but I just understand the very broad strokes and can’t identify more than a few basic rock types, if that.

      I sure never remember the names of most rocks, granite, marble and mica are among the easy ones for me. Just wait till I hit the Rocky Mountains! Oh my!

    Geology is interesting up to a point. I like learning about how rocks got folded over each other, not very technical there!

      I just have a blind spot on remembering names. It's fun going hiking with someone who can point to a cliff and tell me what each layer I'm seeing is. Then I quickly forget.

      I hope you get to visit it sometime, as well as the Rock Museum on the Parkway, which you can't get to from the Asheville area until the parkway is repaired, but you can use detours to get to Spruce Pine, which is near that museum about the area's mining...lots of mica and more recently a pure silicon though the mine just shut down.

    I took geology my first year at college. What I remember most is that each desk in the lab had a tray of about 50 rocks that we were supposed to be able to identity.

    And that sign at the bottom is absolutely correct.

      So in college at least, you knew 50 different rocks. I'm impressed! Yes the people of the world are so much better than their governments. Wonder how that happened. I used to think we should follow good leaders. Not so much.

      And somewhere in that area not only is silicon found, and mica, but it's where Wedgewood stole a bunch of beautiful kaolin and took it to England.
