Some good news

More help for communities hit first and worst

"In some communities, pollution is still increasing, even as the environment nationwide has become cleaner. An order from the Biden White House, for the first time, formally seeks to address environmental injustice, instructing that 40 percent of benefits from federal programs flow to environmental justice communities.

There’s real money behind it, too — $3 billion in federal funding to support projects like turning abandoned properties in Jackson, Mississippi into parks that reduce flooding; a solar job training program in Columbus, Ohio, for people returning from prison; and clean energy upgrades for low-income housing in Rochester, New York. "

--------

New federal funding is directing billions of dollars to help communities prepare for disaster and reduce their risks, such as elevating homes in Florida and restoring shorelines in New Jersey to provide natural flood protection.

Western states can now tap into $4 billion in federal funds to fight drought.  Climate and weather disasters in the U.S. in 2023 alone cost nearly $93 billion. These investments represent the ounce of prevention that’s worth more than a pound of cure."

Just something to consider! I've just included points 4 and 5 from the article posted July 3.

Today's quote:

You think your pains and heartbreaks are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who have ever been alive. -James Baldwin, writer (1924-1987)

    1. If that has goals about the environment even mentioned. Somehow I think it is pushed under the rug of all their other ways of making money...the EPA of course will be one to get the kick. But I'm still hoping a meteorite will strike the orange one down.

  3. Hi Barbara, The Biden Whitehouse will be no longer at the rate its going... The press are much like piranha or sharks, in that they smell blood in the water. Under a Republican administration many of these programs are likely to go away. My other issue is that the government continues to spend like drunken sailors with no regard to our debt and the nation's future...both parties are guilty of overspending and yet the nation must cope with the impact of climate change, regardless of whether it's a cyclical event or one exacerbated by human activity. I know...I do tend to be a "Debby Downer". Sorry. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

    1. Geese, between you and TOm (above) we don't stand an ice cubes chance in hell. Sorry. Just still got some hope in me. The political arena isn't the only way we live our lives. It's not how our interactions with our neighbors and friends are stitched together. Just think, I go to a library, and get books on my iPad...all of which are under a County program...thus some government. But the members of the boards making local decisions are also people I see everyday on the street. Small town life has reinvigorated my belief in fellow man. And I've always believed grass roots movements are how real change is done.
