I kept last year's orchid alive, re-potted it, and fertilized it at least once.
So it is starting to bloom again. I am thrilled as a new parent can be! And with my window-sitting lavender, which has a couple of blooms as well, I'm ready for indoor spring.

DeleteLove seeing that orchid bloom. We've had an orchid since 2009, a gift from our sister-in-law. It bloomed many times over the years, but completely stopped when I repotted it in 2016. I did all the right things, but it has looked dead for years. I still water it. I was going to bury it a couple of months ago when my sister-in-law died, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I still tended to it like it was still alive. just the other day I noticed a stem of flower buds coming up from the plant. I couldn't believe it. I'm going to tend to it so carefully and hope those flowers bloom beautifully soon. I love seeing your orchid blooming.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great story, and you are much more patient with non-blooming plants. It paid off that you're finally getting blooms. It's hardest for me to let the orchids go almost dry and just give them a tablespoon of water at a time. Hope you're doing better.

ReplyDeleteI have never tried to grow orchids. I usually have Amaryllis blooms indoors in the winter, but all my other flowers are outside plants.

Soon as I commented above, I thought of something else. I think it was orchids I saw in the store that had instructions to place one ice cube on the soil to water them. Could have been something else though; my mind does not work as well as it used to!
ReplyDeleteYes Lea, that's the instruction. But I didn't want to freeze any of the delicate roots...so I figure a couple of tables spoons a week is about the same.
