A holiday here in the USA.
An original American Flag in a doorway in Old Salem NC
Sometimes I'm so sad when I have to admit that I live here, at this time. We as a nation have certainly had better times, worth remembering. More times when we could be proud of those who gave their all for the freedom, liberty, justice and democracy which the US used to represent.

I don't think that combat has ever been written about truthfully; it has always been described in terms of bravery and cowardice. I won't even accept these words as terms of human reference any more. And anyway, hell, they don't even apply to what, in actual fact, modern warfare has become.

PS, Veterans for Peace posted the following!

Oh yes, look for people and things that make your heart smile. (And your posts, Barbara, often make mine smile, so thank you for that.)
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you can see the brighter side, as there are certainly many gloomy situations here these days. And it's probably going to get worse before it gets better (with election still 5 months away.) Gotta keep my (our) hopes up!
DeleteGreat post for Memorial Day Barb! I love the Alice and Wonderland quote!
ReplyDeleteTake care, have a great day and a happy week ahead!
And here in blogland, I am so pleased to surround myself with people who make me smile! Wonderland had it's ups and downs too.
DeleteProfund thoughts and quotations here today, thank you!
ReplyDeleteWe gotta stay together and survive! I'm so sad considering the people who have died in honor of the ideals that are held together by a thread these days.
Delete...Barbara, thanks for this fabulous post. I feel Lady Liberty's pain!
ReplyDeleteSecond reply...somehow my replies to Tom's comments don't seem to stay here. Yet I'm the only one who comes back and checks comments and replies over and over again! Thanks for your appreciation Tom, whether you read my reply or not, I'm glad that we share this view of our current situation.
DeleteWe'll get through this. By taking action and resisting. We're worth it.
ReplyDeleteThe ideals on which our government, our country was founding, still remain high in our priorities, though it's tenuous times with the wrong-minded efforts of the current regime.
DeleteI suspect that a lot of very good people feel a bit conflicted today.
ReplyDeleteI think of a young man who is in ROTC in high school - a friend's grandson, while other moms and grandmoms are proud of their offspring in military service working to keep democracy alive and safe, but have to follow orders that might hurt them and support the craziness by those in government these days.
DeleteWarfare is the absolutely worst result of patriarchy in my opinion. The fact that we still practice it sickens and saddens me.
ReplyDeleteThat is the bottom line of the problem, isn't it! One group of (usually old) men wanting something the other has and extending it beyond their own arguments and a fist fight to enlist an army or navy or air force or drones to do the fighting for them
DeleteWe should all do well to remember the sacrifices others have made for freedoms enjoyed today. Sadly, our local Memorial Day parade was cancelled due to inclement weather.
ReplyDeleteRemembering those who sacrificed their lives, as well as those who are being put in harms way still.
DeleteI like John Lennon's quote on love. Love is MIA these days.
ReplyDeleteSinging love songs is one of the great joys of life, or listening to them also.
DeleteYes, I feel quite conflicted today--with a POTUS who thinks of war casualties as losers--if he thinks of them at all.
ReplyDeleteThe loss of so many lives in all wars is very sad. To not honor those who fought for the rest of us to have freedom is a travesty, which tRump knows how to pull off very well.
DeleteDear Barbara, you speak the truth.
ReplyDeleteThe veterans will not be forgotten by their own people. It's sad that the current representative of your country disregards them. And it's sad that he incites people to war to distract from other problems. But I believe you just need a little more patience... and trust that the next president—whether man or woman, white or of color—will do everything better. (After all, things can hardly get worse 😉...)
All the best from Austria, Traude

Such tough times in the US. A country formerly known for humanity and aid.
