Mom potter, and young potter son

Edited June 2014

Finding an old photo that might have something to do with Sepia Saturday's meme this week...right.  Go over to their main blog to see other folks' goodies, at the bottom of the page as links.  (HERE)

When I was in art school at the University of Florida, I took a photography course, which was required of ceramics majors, thinking that way we could prepare our portfolios.  This is one of my favorite pictures of myself and my youngest son, Tai Rogers, when he was 3.

I loved the black and white photos, which reminds me of earlier film, but gave such great details.
Here is a picture of Tai and myself a few years ago when he was about 30.  So much has changed...and I'm proud to say he has his first degree in ceramics (Eckerd College) and is now working on his MBA (also in ceramics) at Indiana University.  That's his sculpture on the fence behind us.

  1. Your adult son looks a lot like you did in the first photo.

  2. That black & white photo of you and your son is gorgeous. While I do prefer color photos, you are right about black & white being so much more intense.

  3. Two fabulous pictures, both full of character and art. And linking them is a story of achievement. You must be proud, and rightly so.

  4. A lovely record of a talented pair.

  5. Thanks, and I had to look very hard to see any resemblance between us...perhaps the cheekbones! The feeling of passing on my interest to my son is definitely pride, and I don't remember ever giving him any indication that I'd like him to be an artist...he sure grew up knowing what it was like to have an artist mom who worked in other fields.

  9. Excellent post. The black and white photograph is special. The comparison with the later photo certainly brought a warm smile. Thanks.

  10. Time passes and then passes some more. My daughter is going back to school to get her MFA in Ceramics in Sept.

  11. Thanks for your positive feedback, everyone! So glad to hear people are looking at my blogs, probably more so because of Sepia Saturday. Kristin, that's great that your daughter is also getting an MFA in ceramics...she's about one year ahead of my son!

  12. Oh Barb, that first photo is just magnificent. La Nightingail is right - it is intense.

And what a lovely surprise to see your son following in your footsteps.

Oh how I wish I was good at potting. My mother took it up for a little while and I have a couple of her things that she made. Unfortunately I just don't have the knack.

  13. I love the black and white photo. And, I do agree with postcardy about the resemblance.

  14. Thank you for sharing these intimate photographs with us Barb; both interesting in their own right, but taken together with the information you provide, they are the perfect Sepia Satrurday post.
